Friday night dinner date at Ragin' River Steak Co. in Independence, Oregon

The historic main street in Independence, Oregon has always charmed me; in the six years I've lived in these parts, it's changed, grown, and from my eyes improved with renovations and the like.

As a result, I try almost every restaurant that opens its doors along that strip... and there's been quite a few in this time. (We live in Salem... but actually will drive over to the Independence Cinema 8 because it's not a Regal, and their popcorn is better!)

Scot and I somehow hadn't yet made it to Ragin River Steak House. Foodie friends living in Independence had tried it some time ago and said it was okay. While it wasn't our planned destination for the evening (that's a long story -- see it in its entirety on my blog, Dogs and Dragonflies), we are SO glad things took the turns they did to bring us there.

It was actually hard to find a parking spot downtown at 6pm on a Friday night. Good for Independence! We walked a few blocks in the brisk evening, and were warmed by our entrance to the interior of Ragin River. It's nice -- but not "too nice", or too trendy, or too anything. Very comfortable. I was curious if the mezzanine level on the sides and rear was real or just for looks; regardless it does a great job of controlling the potential sound problems in the large space with historic brick walls. It also brings the space down to size, leaving it feeling open and airy while intimate at the same time. And there is what appears to be a water feature up there, too; that would have been pretty nice, I think, but perhaps it's under repair?

We were seated at a booth for two one booth away from the front windows; my husband commented how nice it was to look out at the fountain, while I found the view of the interior likewise enjoyable.

Service was attentive and professional; I thought it took a while for our entrees to arrive but Scot felt it was perfect, relaxed and not rushed. It was a Friday night, so the special was free all you could eat fried prawns if you ordered two steak dinners.

I had my eyes on the lobster ravioli because this midwestern girl had been disappointed time and time again by steak here in the PNW. (Sorry, I can't lie!) But how can you say no to all you can eat prawns?

(As an aside, Wikipedia says this about shrimp versus prawns:

"Biologists distinguish the true shrimp from the true prawn because of the differences in their gill structures. The gill structure is lamellar in shrimp but branching in prawns. The easiest practical way to separate true shrimps from true prawns is to examine the second abdominal segment. The second segment of a shrimp overlaps both the first and the third segment, while the second segment of a prawn overlaps only the third segment."

I don't care. They are both tasty. And if it sells better to say prawn versus shrimp, what-evah!)

What I liked most about Ragin River is that clearly, the people back in the kitchen CARE. Everything was fresh and beautiful, plated with precision care and just yummy yummy yummy. Nothing is more enjoyable than eating something that was clearly created with a love for the food, and I'd have to say at least on this Friday night, there was a lot of lovin' going on in the kitchen.

Scot ordered Top Sirloin, medium. "Bacon wrapped with our mushroom demi glace," it was ten ounces of bovine angus perfection. Done perfectly, the impressive thick cut had the rich flavor and the substantial but yet tender texture for which we love a good sirloin. I'm not overstating when I say it was perfect: just the right level of spice, a perfect outer crust, so moist and tender. Gah, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The pan seared veggies on the side were fresh and perfectly done (not crisp, not soggy). The baked potato was piled high with butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon that looked as if someone had styled it so that ever bacon bit was in place. A small garnish of kale and orange slices completed the presentation.

I had the tri-tip with side of house bbq sauce and was certainly happy with it, but I admit I was wanting to steal Scot's plate. He kind of wanted to steal mine, so we did a lot of sharing over the course of the meal. The tri tip was very juicy, sliced to show that it was perhaps a tiny bit overdone as I'd ordered medium rare (warm red center) but some slices had almost no pink. The outside crust was really yummy, and their dark, rich bbq sauce is good. I'd chosen pesto pasta as a side to go with my pan seared veggies.

Dinners come with rolls and honey butter, and these were much lighter than you may be used to (and not greasy like you-know-where). The honey butter was a diving light whip of... well... honey and butter. We went through two baskets -- okay, I just admitted we each ate four rolls over the course of the evening. But hey, they are light, okay?

He started with the cheddar broccoli soup, and I with a house salad with ranch.  You can tell a lot about an eatery by their salads, I think. The mix of spanking fresh greens (no iceberg here, kids) was perfectly positioned with two detailed slices of cucumber, grape tomatoes and croutons (I said hold the onions). Again, everything was fresh and tasty, and well presented.

Oh... and all you can eat prawns. Served 5 or 6 at a time, we went three rounds. Succulent moist little crustaceans in a light crumb breading (maybe pan fried in butter?), the spicy/sweet dipping sauce that accompanied them made these little mouthfuls of joy.

By this time we are moaning, because we're full. But... it's dessert time. The steak dinners come with a "house baked dessert." That evening it was an adorable little personal apple pie tart. I opted to upsize to the cheesecake. I'll admit... we took them away in a box and they will be enjoyed tonight after dinner! (Probably because we pigged out on bread and honey butter throughout the evening.)

We had a nice relaxing dinner lasting about an hour and a half. No rush was ever indicated. We didn't order any wine, but they clearly have a good selection. (To be frank, I don't know enough about wine to warrant ordering it at restaurant prices most of the time. While I have come a long way from the Boone's Farm girl I was in college...) More often than not we stick with water, but I did get a strawberry lemonade which was so-so; it didn't have fruit but a very syrupy flavoring.

Our fantastic steak dinner for two (bread, soup/salad, steaks with all you can eat prawns and dessert), plus 20% tip, was $56.00. An excellent value.

Willamette Burger Company Takeout

I had takeout from Willamette Burger Company for lunch today. I ordered the Aunt Jenny's Mushroom Burger, medium, and the iceberg wedge salad.

The burger was flavorful, but it was well done and a little dry for my taste. The mushrooms were thick-sliced and fresh though.

My iceberg salad was huge, but it barely had bacon on it.

I've had both of these things at WBC before and I remember them to be much better. I guess the burgers don't travel well.

When I had the salad last time, there was a generous serving of bacon, which pretty much makes the salad, because otherwise you just have bleu cheese and tomatoes and iceberg.

I will definitely be dining in next time as opposed to getting takeout.

DaVinci's Happy Hour

It was my friend's birthday the next day so I thought that we could have an early celebration with one of my favorite Salem food items, the DaVinci's Presidential Salad. I've had it a few times before, but this time was no less amazing than before.

The salmon is blackened and it melts in your mouth; it's served on a bed of Caesar salad with big pieces of grated Parmesan, and during happy hour, it's yours for the price of $6. They also have house white and red wines for $4 a glass.

We each got a Presidential Salad and we shared the Strawberry Mountain Burger which was divine. It was served on a Focaccia bun, with their aioli, blue cheese and awesome bacon with a side of chips. My tastebuds were so happy with me.

The two of us left with the most ridiculous check ever, about $30 for two glasses of wine, two salmon salads, and one of the most amazing burgers I've had in a beautiful, romantic setting. I should mention we also ordered a lemonade, all for that price. It blew my mind a little bit. I can't wait to have that salmon and burger again.

Sorry the photos don't do the food justice, they don't have the best photo lighting in there, but it is very romantic!

Orupa

Another birthday lunch in the office and the birthday girl picked Orupa. The six of us showed up at 12:30 and they were able to seat us immediately. Our server was very attentive, quick to fill our water glasses and share the specials. He was patient when we asked him to repeat all of the specials and the entire dessert menu twice.

It didn't take long for our food to start coming out and the presentation was beautiful. Sadly though, as bites were taken, opinions around the table greatly differed.

The birthday girl ordered one of the specials, pulled pork and artichoke hearts over risotto and loved it. The unexpected combination was a big hit and she was delighted by the entire dish.

Another big hit was the Chicken Spinich Salad was fresh, which had a great combination of flavors with craisins, walnuts and feta.

The other special, beef kabobs served over basmati rice, swimming in a beef broth/gravy, tasted fine, was uniteresting and uninspiring. The Margherita Pizza was decent, but again, nothing to write home about.

The burger was terribly overcooked. It was requested medium rare to medium and was definitely well done. Beyond this, it was way too salty. The fries were served in a cast iron pan (same as the dessert in the picture). While it added to the presentation, the server did not mention it was scalding hot (later, when the dessert came out, he did mention it was hot) and reaching across the plate to pick up the burger resulted in a burn on the arm. Sadly, the fries tasted like they had been fried in oil that had been used far too many times and had a fishy taste to them.

The baked apple dessert was gorgeous, but had a similar problem as the fries. Whether it was from the cast iron pan being used for both desserts and main dishes or something used to make the dessert, it tasted fishy. When we asked the server if part of it had maybe been deep fried like the fries, we were told it hadn't been. Thankfully, the server did offer to take the dessert off of the tab.

Overall, the meal was very inconsistent, which is the general response I have heard from fellow Orupa diners. While the restaurant is beautiful and the servers were attentive, the food was definitely hit or miss. I need more consistency to make Orupa a place that I'll frequent.

Word of Mouth

It was Sunday morning, and what could be better to do than to go out for breakfast with friends?

We decided to go to Word of Mouth. I've heard all sorts of amazing things (and not so amazing) about it for a long time, and I was happy to finally get a chance to judge for myself.

Of course, the place was packed, I had heard that it would be and didn't expect anything less. We sat in the waiting area with lots of people and waited..waited..and waited, but that's what happens when you go to a place that lots of other people go (that means it's good). Anyway, we were overjoyed to get our table and were promptly greeted by our server. She was super friendly and knowledgeable. She took our drink orders and I would have ordered a Bloody Mary or mimosa if I hadn't imbibed inordinately the night before. I ordered a green tea and the veggie hash.

My breakfast company ordered veggie hash, meaty hash, and blueberry pancakes.

Now I know what the fuss is about. Sure, if you need to eat something right away, this wouldn't be the place to go, but if you want a serving that is well worth your money in terms of portion size and flavor, and if you like good service, this is the breakfast place to go. Now I've become one of the people that rave about this place. By the way, I ate my leftovers today at work for breakfast, it just reminded me that I should return soon.

Holiday Heart Warmer via Word of Mouth Bistro

According to WOM's Facebook page, many of you have read, commented on and shared the following, but I wanted to give more people an opportunity to read this sweet story. Enjoy your day and I hope you stumble upon a way to "pay it forward". Happy Birthday, WOM! ~KandN

"Happy Birthday to Us!!
Three years ago today Becky and I opened Word of Mouth Bistro. (Dec 15th, 2008)
Our plan was that I would cook and Becky would wait tables.
We thought we might need someone to bus tables during the lunch hour.
Our goal was to serve 50 plates a day.
Fast-forward to six months later, we grew to 20 employees and sometimes served 50 plates an hour.
Present day, it is crazy how many people make their way up the steps of the little green house on 17th Street.
We are forever grateful.

But, is this Success? I thought so until yesterday.
It was my day off and as I drove past WOM, I saw a shopping cart packed with cans and blankets right in front of the steps of the Bistro.
I drove a couple more blocks, pulled over, called the bistro and server Erin answered.
Her reply when I told her I saw the shopping cart and asked if they needed any help getting someone out of there was this: "No Steve, it's totally cool. He's sitting at table one.
One of our customers paid for his breakfast, another customer gave him a hundred dollars,
and the employees chipped in and gave him more."

Dumbfounded, I told her they were all Angels.
As I pulled back out into traffic I thought, "Wonderful-caring employees serving wonderful-caring customers and all of them lending a hand to someone less fortunate, in that little green house on 17th Street.
To have that spirit, that magic--THAT is Success."
Merry Christmas everyone!!"

Plaza Morelia

I'm in love. It's not a crush, not a passing phase, it's full on love. If I could, I would spend all of my time with Plaza Morelia, woo-ing it, eventually getting it to marry me. I'm sure my husband wouldn't mind, he's in just as deep as I am.

You see, after losing our favorite taco truck almost a decade ago (we literally lost it - they moved and we were never able to find them again!), we've done multiple taco tours in our fair city, looking for tacos that were even close. I am so happy to announce that we have finally found a place that measures up and even surpasses our beloved taco truck of late. As an added bonus, it's a taqueria, so you are actually inside, with places to sit. No more balancing our taco plates on the trunk of the car.

You maybe never noticed Plaza Morelia. It's set back a few feet from the road and it's easy to miss going in either direction. And, if you did see it, you may have thought it was only a little grocery store. However, in the back of the grocery store is a taqueria along with tables and chairs. So, walk past the butcher counter, take some notes on which items you are going to get on your way out and belly up to the order counter. There's a huge menu overhead... take a minute to choose your path. No, you can't order one of each - there are way too many options for that.

So far (spread out over multiple trips, mind you), I've tried the huarache, the tamales, a bite of my husband's torta (sandwich) and of course, the tacos. I've tried the carnitas (pork), carne asada (steak), and the pollo (chicken). I tried the red salsa, the green salsa and the other green salsa. While I have enjoyed it all, my favorite is the tacos de pollo, followed closely by the tacos de carne asada.

One of the things I really love is that you add all of your own toppings at the counter. So, you like heavy cilantro, no onion? Extra lime? Green Sauce? Add what you want - the tacos come out naked, with just the meat in a homemade corn tortilla (one of the best tortillas I've had!). My style? Extra cilantro and onion, extra lime, green salsa (not the opaque one, the one that is more translucent).

After you order, help yourself to a real Coke or a real Pepsi from the coolers. Browse the store if you would like. Their baked goods are out of this world. They deliver the food to your table and when you are done, you'll pay for everything, including your sodas and groceries at the front of the store. But on your way out, grab some of the chicken fajita meat from the butcher counter. We did and grilled them up last night - wow! We also grabbed a sugar cane. Yes, like a full stalk of sugar cane. My husband grew up having sugar cane as a treat and was so happy to see he could buy a stalk (He's been gnawing on it ever since).

Oh, and grab a cup of champurrado (mexican hot chocolate) while they have it! It's to die for and they make it daily this time of year.

So, stop in at Plaza Morelia and fall in love. Their food is amazing and everyone is very friendly (yes, they do speak English and Spanish). This place is as authentic as it gets. Just don't ask it to marry you - I've got dibs on that.

Venti's Basement Bar New Belgium Party

We just visited Venti's at their Court Street location and they were doing their New Belgium beer night.

We ordered their pumpkin curry with tofu, falafel platter, falafel pita, and I had the veggie black bean burger with spicy tots.

There was yummy food, and New Belgium beer samplers with one of their representatives on hand. The food was awesome like it usually is and the New Belgium representative came and described all the samplers to us. He had so much great history about the company and really knew his stuff about the beers. I only wish that they had more malty beers and less hoppy ones. All the free swag totally made up for that though.

I had the saison which was great. It had flavors of prickly pear, passion fruit and cloves. We left with all the yummy things in our bellies, Fat Tire New Belgium glasses and some Fat Tire lip balm, which was very moisturizing. Next Venti's beer event? Count me in!

Roxxy Northwest preview

~Review by Chuck Bradley

Tuesday was my second lunch at Roxxy Northwest.

On my first visit, I had their "Strait Outta Philly Cheese Steak" (Their spellings) Sandwich. If I may digress for a moment; I rarely order Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches because they are usually made with lots of Green Bell Peppers, which don't agree with me and Cheese Whiz which ranks right up there with Velveeta on my list of nasty things to put in my mouth. I've been admonished by ersatz purists who say it's not an authentic PCS without this stuff. I hereby make the distinction between "authentic" and good. This was a good PCS made with Prime Rib, Grilled Red, Yellow and Green Bell Peppers, Grilled Onions, Mushrooms and real Swiss Cheese all stuffed in a Cascade Baking Co. French Roll. I selected "Groupies" (regular cut French Fries) cooked crispy for my side. I also sampled their Southwest Chicken and Black Bean Soup which was excellent.

During my next visit, I had a bowl of Navy Bean and Ham Soup ($4) and it was as good as my Mom used to make. There is no higher praise. (Their Soups are freshly, scratch-made every day.) Kelly, my delightful server (and general manager), rattled off the specials, two of which were Beef Tacos for 50 cents and Shrimp Tacos for a dollar. I had a brace of the latter to augment my Soup. I fully expected Bay Shrimp, but they used chopped, battered and deep fried Prawns which were served on soft Corn Tortillas with Pico de Gallo and Shredded Cabbage with a wedge of Lime and Sour Cream and were very good.
The visual impression the venue leaves belies the food quality. It looks like a lot of places which offer the bare minimum in food to satisfy liquor license requirements. Not so here. I had a lengthy conversation with one of the owners, Jeremy Sandburg. Their commitment to use high quality, fresh, local ingredients and proper preparation is impressive.
The service both times was exemplary. Ashley and Kelly were helpful, friendly and fun. On both visits Jeremy came by my table to assure I was satisfied with my meals and service, a courtesy I appreciated.
My next visit will probably include one of their all natural, 1/3 pound, fresh (never frozen), hand spanked Burgers which, if my first two experiences here are any indication, will be amazing.
I’ve saved the best, for fellow tight-wads, for last. Nothing on their lunch menu is over $8!
Check Roxxy Northwest out. I think you’ll be glad you did.

Broken Bread preview

Maybe I'm quirky, but I'm glad Broken Bread opened up in Morton's old digs. I love that location's unique speakeasy type entrance (kudos to Chad/Vegan's Nightmare for that description). I'm also glad they have brightened the place up with a lighter color of paint on the walls. Now if only they could remedy that slight winter chill. I was okay, but a friend who happened to be dining at a neighboring table needed her boyfriend's jacket. And yay for the white butcher paper and crayons on the table to keep young and old entertained.

We were greeted as soon as we opened the door (always a good sign) and were seated at the same table (minus the wobble) we've sat at ever since we began dining at Morton's. The big group table that used to be tucked into a corner is gone, but I noticed the group seated in that area was accommodated by a couple of smaller tables being pushed together.

Since we had totally missed the specials board in the upstairs hallway, I was glad the waiter filled us in after we'd had a moment to browse the menu. After hearing the specials, I was no longer interested in the menu. :)  Turkey and dumplings? Lamb stew? Cauliflower soup? Yes, please! I wanted to try it all, so I waited to make my decision until N made his.

Both of us selected beer to drink. Their selection is small, but well thought out. Oh, and this cider lover was happy to see they offer a Wandering Aengus cider! N picked the cauliflower soup and I ordered a green salad to start. The thick pureed soup was full of savory flavor. I could have easily made a meal of that alone. My salad was a nice variety of greens and tossed with a bright and fresh flavored vinaigrette. One of the greens looked like it might have been young collard greens or maybe baby bok choy. Very tasty!

N's lamb stew had all of the drool inducing flavors of the leg of lamb we roasted last New Years with garlic and rosemary. My turkey dumplings tasted like good old home cooking from my childhood, but so much better--my dumplings were perfect, not too dry nor mushy. Plus, the same greens I enjoyed in my salad were added to my entree.

After a lovely meal like that, my curiosity is piqued and I begin to ponder the question--what's their dessert like? We picked the apple crisp. It wasn't the old standard we've come to expect. I could be wrong, but I believe there was more than one variety of apples used in the crisp--adding to the complexity of flavors, along with the almonds and crasins and drizzled with a light sauce (rum?) before serving.

If you haven't been to Broken Bread yet, you're missing out. It's yet another gem in Salem's crown. Whether you're looking for an inexpensive dinner out or want to splurge on a special occasion, this will fill the bill.
Can't wait to hear about what you ate.  :>) Here's the link for their blog to find out what the specials are today.

Midnite Sports Bar & Grill

I've found another place in town for those of you out there that like excellent food and excellent value.

When I first drove by I was a little nervous about going in. I wondered if this was a nightclub? A bar? I wasn't really sure and it looked a little dark, so I would just keep driving.

I am so happy that I finally decided to stop in. During the day and early evenings this place is roomy and has some great prices. It would be a good place to take a large group. They have dancing and events during the evenings.

Their prices can't be beat and they have a whole assortment of food there. The wings are fantastic and they have a big selection of burgers and side for around 5 dollars. They also offer Mexican food and a full bar with ridiculously cheap drinks. They even have a veggie burger!

The night I stopped in they happened to be holding a poker night. I tried my hand at playing, and let's just say, I won't quit my day job.

They also have two pool tables, video poker, and plenty of room to dance.

They're located on Center Street by the Target mall complex. It'd be a great place to stop in for some grub and a beer after holiday shopping.

I know I'll be going back soon.

I e-mailed the owner for their hours and events and he sent this to me:

Downtown restaurant up for bid

Just heard the news from Mike H., that
"Super Pho is on the market. Here is the craigslist link http://salem.craigslist.org/bfs/2730027310.html "

She must be hanging onto the Lancaster location, but it's a shame about the downtown spot.
I know several people who eat there regularly.
Seems like just yesterday . . .

New owners of Papa di vino’s bring different strengths to the table

~Article by Connor Mitchell
The new owners of Papa di vino’s, Jodie Knight, Jill Loewen and Michael Sullivan, are long-time friends with a love of wine and food, and an appreciation for all the trappings that go with owning a wine bar.

The trappings, in fact, are a big part of the draw for the three long-time Salemites.

“I appreciate the social aspect of wine and the people who drink wine,” Knight said.

“Fun is one of our main agenda items,” Sullivan said.

While all three say they enjoy fine wine and socializing with customers, they bring different strengths to the table.

Loewen, who grew up in an almond orchard in California, brings a fascination for wine that spans from the vineyard to the wine-making process.

“I enjoy the whole process of what goes into making the wine,” she said. “I go out to vineyards, talk to growers and try to get a feel for what goes into growing the grapes and making the wine.

“The end product is fascinating to me,” she said.

Loewen looks for color, smell and most importantly, taste, when sampling wine.

Knight, who grew up in Salem, brings a flair for customer service that she picked up early in life.

Her father owned the once prominent Salem restaurant Via Florencia. And Knight has worked in restaurants off and on since she was a sophomore in high school.

Sullivan also is a veteran of food service, dating back to the age of 15 when he made biscuits for a restaurant in downtown Salem. Today he owns a catering business and specializes in wine and food pairings, often working with winery owners.

He has written over 1,000 recipes and plans to bring many into the wine bar.

“We’re going to change the menu frequently to highlight different wine and food pairings,” he said.

The secret to pairing wine with food, Sullivan said, is to emphasize the characteristics of the wine. “Put the wine first,” he said.

The current menu, which the wine bar unveiled in early November, includes seasoned olive oil and artisan bread; a hummus duet of white and black bean hummus that comes with an assortment of crackers and pita chips; and three bistro cakes, including a salmon cake served with a lemon garlic aioli, a Tuscan chicken cake served with honey mustard aioli, and a fresh tomato bistro cake served with a sour cream and chive mixture.

Sullivan also had added French blankets, which is his take on the classic quesadilla. It combines a flour tortilla, brie, spinach, Dijon mustard and a lemon garlic aioli.

In addition to expanding the menu, the three plan to expand Papa di vino’s wine selection. The wine bar currently features about 150 selections, Sullivan said. They’d like to double that.

Also, they plan on renovating and expanding the bar.

There is one thing they don’t expect to change.

“We’re going to continue to have fun,” Sullivan said. “If you’re going to be in a business, you better enjoy what you do, or you might as well go home.”

Papa di vino’s is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m.

It features live music Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and special prices for women on Women and Wine Wednesdays.

Papa di vino’s is located just off South Commercial at 1130 Royvonne Ave. SE, #104. Phone is 503-364-3009.
