Willamette Burger to Close Broadway Location

Willamette Burger Co. has closed July 2012.

This is a copy and paste from a press release sent from the owners of Willamette Burger Co.

Effective October 1st, Willamette Burger Company will close for business at the 1405 Broadway location.

The decision is difficult, as the neighborhood has been extremely supportive, and the memories of the  building are dear, but the space is small, and maintenance costs have become prohibitive.

Owner Robert Henry offers the following observation: “Broadway was a great starter space – for both our concepts - but we’ve outgrown it. We can’t continue to put resources into a location that isn’t going to yield us any more room or enable us to grow beyond what we can currently produce in that location. We know we have a phenomenal product and an outstanding fan base, but in the current economy, we can’t continue to operate under these circumstances.”

Fans should stay tuned via FB and Twitter (@willametteburgr) for future updates.

The Henrys also own Willamette Noodle Company, which will be open 7 days a week, starting Monday, October 3rd. “We are trying to keep as many of our employees as we can, while we figure out how to best keep the spirit of Willamette Burger Company alive.” states owner, Janet Henry. “We don’t want to let BC fade from peoples’ hearts and minds – we are hoping to figure out something in the near future to keep our Burger fans engaged.”

Reading between the lines, I hope this means they are looking for a new location. This is very sad news and I feel extremely guilty for not going in there enough. I have to say that the location was a bit of an inconvenience for this South Salem resident. The owners have promised to let us know when they make future plans, so stay tuned. In the meantime get in there and get a burger.

Every time N and I have been in, we've wondered how difficult it must be to work behind the counter and in the kitchen. It's a good thing most of the staff is so young!
Right now I have an overwhelming urge to scope out the entire downtown for a new venue for WB, but I know that's exactly what you all have been doing.
Thanks for keeping us all in the loop and letting us know we better hustle in for a tot and burger fix to last us awhile.

It would be awesome if they moved into one of the nearby spaces that have recently been revamped in the Broadway area... it's a great little district that needs some vacancies filled.

OMG! This makes me so sad!! Easily one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall places. We always took visiting friends and family here. I'm so sad that they couldn't make it work in this location.

I can only hope that they can open another space soon. Maybe a food cart that does tots? Oh my what am I going to do without their tots?!

I'll miss you WBC.

I wonder how many Groupon's they've still got outstanding for WBC?

I usually enjoyed my food there, but I agree the space is just too small.

Shouldn't be that hard to find space in Salem right now though....

I'm confused. Have they merely outgrown the space and are now looking for a larger one, or are they going out of business permanently?

Given how small it is, I find it a little hard to believe that they went into the old Rock-n-Rogers space without knowing there was a high probability they would outgrow it even if they were only moderately successful. If you are going to sell cheap eats, you need lots of seats.

I hope they find a new place soon too! I have to say the small space has kept me from going there as often as my stomach would like me to. Please reopen soon! : ) Good luck!

Ugh! National burger chain opens and local boutique burger place closes. Sad day. Always loved WBC but it's a long drive from south Salem.

Hi Folks, as we stated in our press release, the investments we would have to make in that building far outweigh any gain we might potentially see. We were able to patch things along for the first several years of WNC there, but the building continues to deteriorate, and the ability for a new restaurant to fund those expenses when there's no real return on the investment is non-existent. We do hope to have a solution to a location soon, but moving is also expensive, and time consuming. We need to regroup, get our tots in a row, and come back stronger.

Our Groupons expire on 9/30, which is why we chose to stay open through that date. We are not looking to cheat anyone out of a deal they paid for, nor are we wanting this to be a final goodbye. What we are having to do is make decisions to protect ourselves and our family - owning a small business isn't easy in the best of times, and this has proven to be more of a challenge than we can bear at this time.

We really appreciate everyone's kind words and the encouragement we are getting... This took a lot of courage on our part, and faith that we ARE doing right, by our customers, our employees and our selves. We will be back!

This saddens me because their VN burger was pretty much the best thing to happen to burgers, anywhere, ever. I also hope they are just searching for newer, bigger and more convenient digs. I guess this gives them the opportunity to focus more on Willamette Noodle company. Since I haven't been there in awhile maybe thats a good reason to support their other venture.

We love WBC, both the food as well as the location, although we definitely understand why the owners need a bigger venue with less need for maintenance and less expense. I hope they find a good new spot soon and re-open.

If only a place would open up next to WNC, we could have both restaurants sidebyside...that would be really cool.
