Orupa -- up on the roof

After spending the first part of our Saturday running errands and working in the yard, N and I spiffed ourselves up and drove downtown to enjoy the grand opening of Orupa's rooftop. When the Waterplace building had just been completed, I had assumed that the welcoming rooftop would be for the restaurant. Even though it's Oregon and we have fewer outside dining opportunities than the sunbelt states, we still count the days until we can sit streetside and people watch. I'm so happy Orupa found a way to make it work.

Instead of entering via the restaurant's door, we were beckoned to an entrance just to the north where a young man checked the list for our names and escorted us to the elevator. It was only a quarter past the starting hour of 6pm, but the roof was already close to being full. We spotted one of the remaining tables with chairs right beside the jazz quartet in the corner.

Our table offered a view of Liberty and the plaza just below the city offices. What a wonderful summer evening for an outdoor opening! We noticed there was a bar set-up on the south end of the roof. Both of us chose a glass of red sangria and left our credit card to start a tab.

We stayed a little over an hour, enjoying the music, sangria and friendly waitstaff who kept us nibbling on endless skewers of chicken, prawn, beef, crab, etc. Waves of people kept arriving, so we decided it was time to free up our table for someone else.

I'm eager to see how they use this new space. Will it be for a few designated nights of the week? Will live music be a mainstay? However Orupa does it, I'm glad they did. I understand they're starting an email newsletter if you want to stay in the know about upcoming events.

Did you go to the opening? If so, were you one of the graceful dancers we spotted and how was your experience?
