Burger and a View at Flightdeck
Was that burger I remember from the mid-seventies so delicious, because it was "free"?
"Really? I get paid to work AND get a free burger?"
Maybe it was a constant state as a teen, but when my shift was over, I was hungry--very hungry.
After I had worked at Sizzler for 6 months, they changed up the free daily meal offered to employees to 50% off certain menu items. Perhaps that change has made the memory seem even tastier all these years later.
That Sizzler burger was a simple burger and looked very similar to the two in the slide show above--even the fries. That's the memory that popped into my head as I took the first bite of one of Flight Deck's burgers. Mine was their B24 Bomber (with sauteed mushrooms and Swiss cheese) and N's -- P51 Mustang (with bacon and American cheese, but he asked for and was given cheddar instead). The menu lists a choice of 9 sides (Fries, Tater Tots, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Cottage Cheese, Fruit, Soup, Salad, or for an additional charge-- Onion Rings) to go with their burgers, both of us chose fries.
Food can transport me back in time and that's exactly what that first bite did. Thankfully, my sensory experience didn't include the ill fitting, itchy, brown polyester outfit I was issued. No, the burger wasn't the most amazing I've ever bit into, but it was cooked just right, the bun was toasted and the produce was fresh. Also, it was delivered with a smile, ketchup and came with a big windowed view of McNary Field's tarmac.
During our dinner, I spotted a few solo diners. I imagine it would be nice to have an interesting view to enjoy if you didn't have any dining partners. Even though both of us were in the mood for fries and a burger that evening, I couldn't help but notice the "Spaghetti and French Onion Soup" on the specials board. Sounds like home cooking or good old comfort food. Are you a Flight Deck customer? What's your favorite menu item?
