Tuff Ranch For Sale

Update: Tuff Ranch is now closed & is now McNary Restaurant and Lounge

A commercial realtor is listing Keizer's Tuff Ranch BBQ restaurant for sale. Here's the listing, scroll down to the second one. That location at the McNary Golf Club seems to be in constant turnover. for $100,000 you can be the next one to make a go of it. I would imagine a restaurant like this needs to draw in folks from Salem to fill seats. I've tried to think of why I haven't eaten at Tuff Ranch or any of the other previous restaurant in that location. It's not that I don't like BBQ or steak. Could it be that there are a lot of stop lights between my house and that location. It's actually a nicer drive to head over to Independence. They got a great steak house over there. Now, for some reason, I was willing to drive to Stayton for Apizza. But that place didn't last either. Was it the price of gas? What are your reasons for not going to certain restaurants?

I don't know about all of the other changes of this restaurant in the past 20+ years, but it was my understanding this last change (when John and his wife took over after Prime bailed), it was as a favor to the golf course and a way to promote their catering business.

For me there are at least three reasons:
1.It's a long haul from my house in the South Salem Hills.
2. I need reason to believe the food is really worth it---not the case with MiNa, Prime or Tuff Ranch.
3. Given the fact it's off the main drag (& I'm not a golfer), it's simply not on my radar.

I checked out Tuff Ranch Facebook page. Sure looks like it's business as usual. I've heard it's a busy place on the weekends.

First of all a true BBQ place shouldnt be located on a fancy Golf Course. BBQ isnt about fine dining. Tuff Ranch's location and prices put it out of reach for alot of people.

Anon, I was just checking out their a Menu and the highest price item is $11.25.

It's really close for me. But I haven't been to Tuff Ranch. Mostly because the last few incarnations of this restaurant have remained largely the same. Reasonable prices by golf course standards, but not the same food or service. Every time I've gone there, the service has been pretty slow, and the food decent, but meh.

The look of the place is a big open space, which is ok, but it falls short of elegant, like most other golf course restaurants. If you want to be different from other golf course restaurants, thats fine, but they haven't changed it enough, in my opinion.

Is elegant dining at golf courses a thing of the past?
When Prime was in business, the old dance floor was still visible--before recent remodel. I can't remember the last time I ate at a fine establishment with a dance floor. Can you?

Did Bigfoot Bar and Grill close recently
as well?

Bigfoot Bar and Grill did close, but Tuff Ranch has not.

We live south close to downtown, and we drove to Stayton for apizza all the time - even with Christos and several SFNY pizzas nearby.

The website says that a sale is pending for Tuff Ranch. That was quick.

I was just there last Friday, and it was business as usual. Their meat was good and tender although not a smoky as I've had before.

Decor is a problem and their online menu doesn't show it, but their ribs, brisket and tri-tip are in the price range of 14 - 19 dollars, so it is a little spendy. However, I will assure you that my husband and I could share one meal and be just fine. The portions are pretty big.

If you get a chance- try their mac and cheese. It's white with bacon and it will stop your heart, for better or worse. Ha ha!

Kristi, Thanks for weighing in on this. It's good to hear exactly what's happening instead of guesses.

Another site says Tuff Ranch is closed. Anyone know if this is true? Also saw a “Closed” sign in the window of Jr's Taqueria around noon today. Please tell me this one is not so! That would be a blow to the Mexican dining scene in Salem!

According to Tuff Ranch's Facebook page, they closed their doors Tuesday night (May 17th).
I imagine it won't be long before it reopens as McNary Restaurant.

Oops, I never got around to using my Groupon for Tuff Ranch! :-P

Stephanie... I had a business close on me after buying a (rather spendy) Groupon and being unable to use it. When Groupon got confirmation of the business closing, they refunded me. Just so you know :)
