Smokin' Swine is Back!

Update: Smokin' Swine has sold their trailer, but you can buy their sauces at Roth's.

I got an email update earlier today from Ken Pickett, owner of Smokin' Swine:

"I will be serving Southern "Q" starting Saturday April 23 from 11:00 - 6:00. I am located on Silverton Road right next to Kilroy's Storage about 1 1/2 blocks West of Lancaster. You can't miss the big black "Q" wagon. If you are heading East on Silverton Road take a left into the Kilroy's Storage driveway and take a sharp right as soon as you turn in.
I will be open Tuesday thru Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, unless I get really tired or the food runs out.  My official address is 3905 Silverton Rd NE. My business phone is 503-689-4242.
Honk and give a loud shout as you drive by."
It looks like Smokin' Swine will be at the "food pod" over on Silverton Road.  I'm looking forward to reviewing the new Smokin' Swine, and instigating another passionate debate about BBQ. I hope you'll join me.  Until then, please take a moment to entertain yourself with an education of the different types of BBQ:

I'm a Memphis guy for pork, Texas for beef.

Great news!
Love the video, even if they slam us yanks. :) Besides, do beards really go with BBQ?

I've missed the Swine so much. Hopefully Ken will still have those delicious hushpuppies. I grew up in NC where BBQ (especially pulled pork) is a way of life and every BBQ place served hushpuppies. When I moved here and found that the only hushpuppies people knew were the shoes and authentic smoked BBQ was a rare find I retreated into the recesses of BBQ oblivion. (pause for effect, securing Oscar nomination)But then like a shining beacon of BBQ brilliance came the Smokin Swine (second location). Then the swine was no more. But it shall rise again! Welcome back Ken!

O.K., I get it, there are people who like Smokin Swine. We tried it three times, in the past, at two of their locations. I am really sorry folks, but it was just not anything to write home about. The side dishes were all zapped in the microwave, and you could tell. And the meat, tasted, well, it tasted like three day old meat. Whoever Smokin Swine is, he has tried it not only in different places in Salem, but also Bend. And they always end up closing. Maybe that's because other people out there don't think it's that good either.

I'm a big fan of smokin swine, but honestly all of his locations have hurt him. Market st? Lancaster? Silverton?

Downtown, west Salem or south Salem - he would do many multiples of sales.

Ken is up and runnin’. I had a sensational Pulled Pork Sandwich with Slaw and amazing Collard Greens today. Although no Ribs were on the menu yet, he tells me they are soon to follow. After the sad excuse for a PP Sandwich I recently had at the Wooden Nickel in Sublimity, the Smokin’ Swine’s reminded me what great Que is all about. I know some folks turn up their noses at Collard Greens. If you don’t try Ken’s, you’re missing out!

Stopped in for lunch, today... Had the Pulled Pork Nachos ($5.00).. Round Tortilla Chips covered with Baked Beans, Pulled Pork, Cheese and some BBQ sauce. Really enjoyed it.. Some parts were pretty spicy, for me, probably from the beans, but I enjoyed it.. tasted like a few chopped jalapenos must be in the beans.. Pork seemed tender and had good flavor, although I am not much of an expert on Restaurant BBQ, as most of my experience is from what I cook on the Traeger, at home.. Will definitly be back to try some of the other choices.. Looked like today's choices were the Nachos or a Pulled Pork Sandwich, with Slaw. Would have loved a peak inside the smoker..

Can't wait to try it. Wish he was on the south side sine I don't venture out there often.

As a former KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) judge, the Smokin' Swine is as good as it gets in Salem. Smoke rings abound on these tasty perfectly coddled meats - and I've tasted a LOT! I ate at each of their locations and am hitting the food truck tonight as I Just learned that Ken is back in town. I just hope they still serve fried pickles.
