Neighborhood Harvest of Salem - Blueberries

Hey Salemites! Would you like to pick blueberries for a good cause? Neighborhood Harvest of Salem (www.salemharvest.org) is picking 2000 blueberry bushes on Wednesday evening and Friday morning this week. They are going to open up the Wednesday picking for more pickers because there are plenty of berries and there is plenty of parking. Friday's picking hasn't even opened up for sign-up yet, so get signed up to volunteer quickly. Today's harvest filled up fast!

The great thing about Neighborhood Harvest is that you are doing charity while getting free produce. Half the the produce goes to Marion Polk Food Share to add fresh fruit to food boxes for families in need. The other half? It goes home with you! I went out today and picked 12 pounds of blueberries in 2 hours. I brought 6 pounds home, which will keep me stocked with berries throughout the winter. So come out and pick blueberries for charity (and some for your tummy!).

Sign up at http://salemharvest.org/Volunteer.html . Sign up is quick and easy and you don't have to commit to anything unless it fits your schedule.

I'm signed up to do this tonight!

I signed up but never heard back from anyone about where it was. I tried to contact through phone, email and even twitter. No response. We had about nine people ready to help out. Too bad.

Neighborhood Harvest is an all-volunteer organization run by a dedicated group of people, most of whom have full-time jobs. This project has become wildly popluar: They've experienced a 500% increase in registered fruit pickers - in just 2 weeks! There will be plenty of opportunities for picking throughout the summer, so everyone should get a chance! Keep checking the website & signing up for harvest parties. :)

Because the location is not online it felt like they were being secretive about the process. Maybe it's just my insecurity but I was a little offended. They finally contacted me last night with Friday's time and place. I won't be able to make it because I will be at the Bite and Brew.

Hi Salem Man, we're still working out the kinks and are working to streamline the process of getting info to pickers more quickly. We haven't released property addresses in the initial email to protect the privacy of people who have donated fruit, but I think you'll find you get info sooner next time. We hope to see you soon! Nadene :)

Thank you Nadene, it looks like a lot of fun and a really great idea. I hope I can get my family out to one of these things soon.
