Happy Hour at Jonathan's

Jonathan's is now closed

It was a beautiful day in Salem, one of the few we've had this spring, so our little group decided to enjoy it at one of Jonathan's sidewalk tables. Jonathan's new location on High St. has been up and running for a few months now and has recently updated their cocktail menu, known as the Book of Jonathan.

After poring through the Book of Jonathan (which has a lot of great drink options, but we agreed looked a little too shiny and flashy for our taste), two of the group decided on one of the mojito options from the Mojito Monday specials. Both agreed that the mojito was good, but decided on a different option for the second drink. They both ordered a sparkler made with grapefruit juice. It came in a large wine glass and looked pink and pretty and fun. And to top it off it was delicious! I think we found a drink winner, except that there are so many others to choose from that it would be hard to stick to just one drink on future visits.

We usually meet right after work and partake in happy hour food as well as drink specials. We had been to Jonathan's for a happy hour before and ended up being very disappointed in the food options. I was really hoping to have some new options for small bites to eat. Since Jonathan's had updated their drink menu, I was excited to see what they had done with the happy hour food menu as well. Unfortunately, the happy hour food had not been updated. The food menu at happy hour just doesn't do justice to the atmosphere and the regular menu at Jonathan's. It feels more like a lower-end bar menu with items such as nachos and sliders. The two of us eating both decided on the one option that looked decent - the grilled shrimp skewers. The skewers came with four large prawns, grilled with butter and spices, and had a side of butter served with it. It was actually quite good and is the only happy hour menu item I can really recommend at this time. Please take into consideration that the food isn't horrible, it is just so-so, and it doesn't seem to fit with the whole Jonathan's vibe. I would love to see some more exciting, unusual options that highlight Jonathan's unique restaurant menu.

I must say I am really happy with the outdoor dining option at Jonathan's.  I would definitely recommend ordering drinks at an outdoor table on a sunny afternoon this summer. And you can't go wrong with a bowl of Jonathan's chowder.

Thanks Rebekah for taking the time to write a review. Our happy hour food menu is a work in progress and I would love to know what you would like to see on the menu.
The grilled prawns were a recent addition as were the small salads, chef spread and prawn cocktail.
We are always open to suggestions and I look forward to your input as well as others.

This is a great place to meet and visit with friends. Great food too!

It's so great to see a business owner open to the feedback and advice of his patrons! Thanks for taking the time to check in.

I would like to see things on the happy hour menu that reflect your full menu. When I was in several weeks ago, it just didn't seem like the HH menu reflected the classy nature of Jonathans, but rather a bar/pub. The prawns and the salads you mentioned seem like a great start!

And for the record, love, love, love the clam chowder

Thank you Little Bird and Amber. So like a small plates happy hour of some of our customers favorites? Sounds like a great idea....

The "Small Bites" menu and the double happy hour will start tonight. We may not have all of the items available tonight on the menu, but we will definitely have it fully in effect come next Tuesday.
