Freshmart - Farm Fruits and Vegetables

In my recent quest for fresh fruits and vegetables to add to my diet, I've discovered a new store in town called Freshmart. It's located on the corner of McGilchrist and 13th St. in south Salem. Freshmart has only been open since April, but they already have a nice selection of items.

I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. First of all, I noticed the apples and oranges in the outdoor covered area. There were a variety of apples at good prices and I put some in my shopping basket. They have the cutest little baskets here that are just big enough to load up on produce, but not get in the way of other patrons. The store is small, but has two cash registers in the middle, a side for fresh produce, and the other side of the store was an assortment of other healthy, local, or otherwise interesting food. There is a refrigerated section with dairy products and drinks, a freezer with Willamette Fruit Company pies and fruits, a large selection of Bob's Red Mill grains (including lots of gluten free items), and...this might be my favorite...Dave's Killer Bread!

The indoor produce section had some produce, but looked like it could really use a little more variety. At the end of my shopping trip, I ended up talking to the owner, Michael Morrow, who said that they would be able to keep more produce in the more customers they brought in to buy it. He said produce has a short shelf life and he would add more produce as more customers discovered the store. He also mentioned that he is working on getting connections with local farmer's so he can sell as much local produce throughout the year as possible.

All in all, I was very happy with my experience at Freshmart. The apples and lettuce I bought were very good. The cucumbers I bought were a little bitter, but that's happened to me lots of places. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the store was clean and bright, and the prices were very reasonable. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Rebekah, Thanks for scouting this place out for all of us! Everytime I drove by, prior to their opening, I wondered what it was going to be like. Now I know :>)

We've stopped in once and loved it! Nice and clean, well set up. A whole wall of Bob's Red Mill items. And really great prices. We're definitely adding it to our regular shopping schedule.

I think there were a few organic items, but it sounds like they will get a lot more local or organic stuff as the customer base can support it. He is still working on making relationships with different farms so he can get better produce.

Also, I think if you stop by and let them know that you would like to buy organic they would be happy to hear what customers want to see.

I was also there on Sunday afternoon and was going to make a post to Eat Salem to give them some press! Definitely want to get them some more business and see more local produce available seven days a week. I am still enjoying my yellow and orange tomatoes, mini watermelon, and lots of NW apples!

Thanks so much for the wonderful post and the great feedback! I finally got a chance to do some reading online. What a nice post about our store. :)

We've been very busy trying to get more items in the store and expand into new product lines weekly. I have lots more changes coming. And lots more local produce and products. We're a small family owned business, so it's taking us a little longer than expected. But hopefully everyone continues to be pleased.

As to organics: We had a large section, but the spoilage rate is rather high and had to limit them until more people are aware we are here. But I promise I shall bring them back as soon as I can. :)

Thanks to everyone on here for the wonderful response! Please let me know if there are any great products you wish to see in our store or have any comments. I love to hear what everyone thinks! I'm in the store about 99% of the time. :)

Do they carry locally produced honey? If not, where would be the best place to look? Thanks

Local honey is always available at the Saturday Farmer's Market, in addition, local farm Abundant Life Farm out of Dallas (all organic) sells fantastic honey that he gets from his neighbor,

Since the last comment about FreshMart dates back to June of 2010, I thought it would be appropriate to add something that is more current. This market has become a go-to place for produce for me. Prices are super low on most items and very competitive on others. This is Salem's best place to shop for produce where quality and low prices are on top of the list. Their variety is very good and it is likely you will find most, if not all, of what you're looking for on the shelves and bins. I can't be happier to have this store in Salem. Saving money on great produce is helping make the dollars stretch; no doubt something we can all use. With the summer coming, I'm looking forward to the local stone fruits. When you find a locally owned mom and pop shop of this high quality, support is crucial for long term viability. We're all very fortunate to have such a store in Salem, thank you for helping this family eat healthy and conserve funds.

When I spotted the newly empty spot next to Fitt's Seafood and Santiam Wine, I couldn't help but wish Freshmart would move in. That would be a winning combination!
