We gathered at La Margarita Express for Happy Hour this time. It was a time of celebration for some and a time of comfort for others. And isn't that what happy hours are for? Celebration and comfort after a hard day of work?
Three of us ordered a beautiful drink called a Consuela. I'm not sure what all was in it, but it was fruity and delicious and strong. It came in a wooden bowl and was garnished with orange, lemon, and lime slices as well as plenty of maraschino cherries. Another member of our party ordered a Margarita, which came in a traditional margarita glass with a salted rim.
The food on the table was as delicious as the drinks. La Margarita has an El Salvadorean section of their menu, which offers one of my favorite items: pupusas! Pupusas are basically a flat tamale with a corn layer on the outside and meat or cheese filling. They are usually served with a cabbage salad. I ordered one cheese and one pork pupusa. Another of our crew ordered one pupusa with both pork and cheese in it. Two others ordered Huaraches, which are flat thick tortillas topped with meat, cheese, lettuce and green sauce. (The word is that the green sauce is VERY hot and should be ordered on the side so you can control the amount you get). I also saw a chicken quesadilla somewhere on the table that looked lumpy with chicken and absolutely delicious.
I would say that La Margarita Express was a definite win for happy hour goodness, even though I'm not sure we actually got any happy hour deals. The regular prices on drinks are very reasonable and they are well-made. The food is always delicious and there is usually something to be found on the menu for under $6. I have always liked La Margarita Express, but had never ordered a drink there before this visit. That will definitely be changing in the future!
