Tuff Ranch BBQ Pre-preview

Update: Tuff Ranch is now McNary Restaurant & Lounge

N and I couldn't stand the anticipation. A new barbecue restaurant in town?  It was date night and we were raring to go take a look at what was happening at Tuff Ranch BBQ!

As soon as we entered, we were greeted by John Carter, one of the owners.  No need to grill this guy, it's obvious he and his wife, Alaina, have a dream and they're eager to share their story and plans.  In the brief time they've been at McNary Golf Club, they've been planning and preparing an interior facelift, training new employees, getting all the necessary permits and (oh yeah) feeding people.  Despite living and breathing Tuff Ranch BBQ, John was being a gracious host during our visit and making a point of stopping at each table to chat and express gratitude to the customers continuing to come inspite of the restaurant being in a state of reorganization.

John said that opening Tuff Ranch at McNary is like coming home.  He began working at the golf club's driving range when he was 13 years old.  By the time he was in college, he had worked his way up to bartending.  After listening to John, both N and I have a good feeling.  They're making changes to the interior space, they're building relationships and they're getting a feel for what they believe people are looking for in a restaurant.

If you're interested, I suggest giving them a try during their grand opening on Feb. 13.  They're going to roast a pig.  Don't forget to call and make reservations.

I don't know if you have tried the Soup Cellar since it has been sold. I see it is not on your list (on the right side column of your home page) Just curious if you ever plan on doing a review. Personally, I think it is really good.

Mmm! Sounds awesome. Why dont we have more BBQ here? The BBQ restaurants never seem to stick around here. Also, did you see if they have Wandering Aengus Cider? It is soooo amazing with BBQ. Specially pulled pork.

Their liquor license wasn't official until the day after our visit (Thursday). But you're right, Wandering Aengus and some local brews would be an awesome partner with the BBQ. :>)

Just had the JC, aka pulled pork sandwich. It was just right with plenty of flavor, but not overloaded with sauce. The slaw was perfect, too. Everything was so fresh and so clearly homemade - even the buttermilk ranch dressing. I have a new favorite restaurant! Let's support this new BBQ and get one to stick around!

We went for dinner last night (Saturday) it was very busy and the noise in the dinning area was so bad you could not have a conversation. The waitress were hurried and unorganized, said sorry a lot. Too many bus people not enough waitresses. Bus people too intrusive, they don't know they're suppose to be in the 'background.' Drinks ok the first round, 2nd round were served in paper cups because the dishwasher broke. The food was good once it got to the table, portions were large, cooked well and very tasty. The bar was very crowded after dinner so they had people sitting outside in the cold without enough servers. We were only able to get served two drinks in about 4 hours. I'd say they were overwhelmed for the amount of people vs. staff and they staff they do have was a bit inexperienced (other than the bartender - who was amazing). Good food, not so good service and not very good environment for a good meal.

We had a blast at the party with the band "lush"..!!! It wasa wicked busy and their staff was awesome..!!! That bar isn't built to handle that kind of volume and those guys and girls rocked!!! We sat outside and loved it, where else can you go in Salem with multiple fire pits and comfy seating with such a great view??? Oh...the food is the best BBQ in the Valley!!! Thank goodness somebody is having a little fun out there, and they aren't so stuffed up anymore!!!

This place is very clickish! We live very close by and have tried them several times and it is always the same. We do like to support our local businesses but when you are treated the way this place treats guests we will spend our money elsewhere.Very poor service, they pretty much ignore you unless you are one of "the regulars"
