Chuck wait! Don't spread falsities :) This Pizza Hut razing was of particular interest to me as I live directly across the street. Smelly old Pizza Hut has been our main view from our big 20-foot windows ever since we moved in. When I came home last Thursday and saw the restaurant flattened, I cheered. Too soon. They're building a new Pizza Hut right back up. We are in for some noisy construction months ahead, and Salem is not losing a Pizza Hut location. -guitar4me

The Pizza Hut on S. Commercial is gone. I mean building and all. Nothing left but a concrete slab and burning memories of appalling service and mediocre food. Let this be a testimony to how well absentee ownership (an educated guess here) works in the food service industry. I'll not shed a tear for this one's demise.

If this happened it would be a little ironic. Don who owns White's & Don's Restaurant on 12th Street, owned The Ritz at one point, and sold it after he got White's going again. White's has been for sale for the past two years, with the asking price dropping by $200,000 during that time. This website still has the business for sale: http://www.restaurants-for-sale.com/newsite/rro/listingview.asp?id=17014 $975,000 asking price + $6,000 a month for rent.

These are both unsubstantiated rumors. Perhaps someone could shed some light as to their veracity.
1. References in reviews, on other sites, suggest that Church Street Pizza is under new ownership/management. (Chuck, N & I visited Church St. a few weeks ago. Ian was there, as was an employee who referred to him several times as boss.~KandN)
2. I heard, from a questionable source, that White's has sold to the owners of the Ritz Diner. Does anyone know if either of both of these is/are true?

Anyone know what is going in by Roth's? I keep meaning to ask when I go in the store but always forget...........
ReplyDeleteRumors range from Taco Bell, Quizno's and I even heard Subway on that Roth's location. I wouldn't really care for any of those.
ReplyDeletewhen did the european store and bakery on commercial open?
ReplyDeletePrivet European Grocery opened over a year ago, according to Amy's post
ReplyDeleteWhere/what are The Islander and Alcyone?
ReplyDeleteI spotted a posted liquor license notice on the front door of the old Marco Polo location on Liberty SE, with the name "The Islander".
ReplyDeleteAlcyone will be a cafe and catering business in the Pringle Plaza. On the west side of Prudence Uncorked.
If Bishop's Downtown Grocery Store is the one next to the Coffee House Cafe, it won't be opening - at least not with the original owner. The owner has taken off. Rumors go so far to even say he's in the Netherlands now.
ReplyDeleteTaken from Roxxy closes Jonathans opens in the comments section on eat salem site;
ReplyDeleteUltra Six Lounge
Six Ultra Lounge, 248 Liberty Street NE, Salem; will surrender the liquor license either on Dec. 21,
2009 or on the date the business is sold, whichever comes first.
After reading further I didn't know the owner of the Six, Spencer Emmons was killed in a car accident in Florida on December 11, 2009!
ReplyDeleteI found this link on Spencer Emmons
There will be a new BBQ restaurant in Stayton (Stayton BBQ, I believe) sometime soon. Based on the readerboard it was originally supposed to be open in early December, now it just says "Coming Soon" - looking through the windows I see uncovered framing between the entrance and the kitchen. Location is the corner of 1st and Locust, previously home to Homestyle (Hometown?) Diner and Maui Grill. We'll see...
ReplyDeleteJunknJay posted the new liquor license on Six Ultra Lounge 12/22. Roxxy's soft opening (3rd time this year) was Wednesday - try the calzone. Kitchen coming to FlipSide this spring.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the story with Roxxy? Is it the same owners, new owners, what?
ReplyDeleteJust heard about this on Facebook about the new restaurant that took over Prime's space at McNary Golf Club , "Yes, there is a new restaurant called Tuff Ranch. They are open 10am-10pm on a limited menu (a full menu coming soon now that they have their olcc permit). I've eaten there 6x in the last week (I work in the building) and their food is delicious!"
ReplyDeleteSoy BBQ has taken over the vacated Tater's location on Chemekata.
ReplyDeleteWow, Five Guys? Where's that opening up? It's an east coast fast food restaurant with a limited menu and home made fries. Really tasty burgers and fries. Bad news for Willamette Burger Co. and the burger joint on on Mission. Despite the high quality of Five Guys, it's considered one of the unhealthiest fast food places. Free peanuts.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, They're opening up near Ross Dress for Less on Lancaster.
ReplyDeleteI just heard that someone else got the lease on the Bishop's spot and I saw some people in there the other day. Hopefully something will come from it.
ReplyDeleteI hope it works out. I had heard that someone was looking into it, but they decided the overhead would be too high. Rent downtown must be expensive.
ReplyDeleteClearly no one cares, but Mixteca closed as well- my favorite Mexican in town
ReplyDeleteI went to Mixteca's old location, now called El Turbo (or something like that) and it was virtually the same menu as Mixteca down to the daily specials. It was a rainy day during lunch and we all got a chicken broth soup instead of chips and salsa, but other than that it seemed like it was Mixteca. Well, except the burrito wasn't massive like they used to be.
ReplyDeleteIf they still ship all the peppers for their sauces from Oaxaca then I'll give it a chance
ReplyDeleteRoxxy's has closed again, was only re-open about a month. How lame! I don't understand why people can't figure out what to do in that spot. I live in the neighborhood and tried it once under each owner. Here's an idea: stop serving mediocre food and booking crappy white blues rock and maybe people will show up... A great microbrew with quality food would be perfect there. Word of Mouth proves: people will turn up if you have good food, local ingredients, reasonable prices and friendly service.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anonymous. A micro brewery with good food (borrow from Word of Mouth's or Venti's models) could do well there. Since WIllamette is there, they could cater to students as well as townies and state employees.
ReplyDeleteThe old Blue Pepper is another space that has potential. What's up with the Churches popping up in downtown????
I had the Valentines Day special at Tuff Ranch BBQ. Fantastic. Their BBQ sauce was excellent and their homemade german-style potato salad put my girlfriend in a decadant coma of satisfaction. (not easily accomplished with potato salad) Big Thumbs Up!
ReplyDeleteThanks for cleaning out some of the old "deadwood" on your list of reviews.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the ones you mentioned above could be removed soon...Caffe 680, Caffe Milan & Coffee Paradigm
Others who could be taken off the "other reviews" list and/or combined are:
1. Combine Grand Vines & Grand Vines Deli
2. Remove Lefty's
3. Remove Maverick's
4. Remove MiNa's
5. Remove Prime Steak & Seafood
6. Combine Soba & Soba Asian Bistro
7. (Thai Orchid is misspelled)
8. Combine The Wild Pear & Wild Pear
9. Remove The Arbor Cafe
10 Combine Sassy Onion and The Sassy onion
Over 'n Out
3-D
Alright, I'll get to cleaning up some of this stuff but I'm not removing closed restaurants from the list. I think it's interesting to read about the businesses that have gone under or left. Lefty's for instance, is something that my family still talks about all the time. I'll come up with a way to make it more clear that they are closed. 3D, send me an email, eatsalem@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteDone. Is there anything else I can do for you?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the new business that has opened in the Blue Pepper location is called? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteRossella, It's called Clockworks Cafe.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone reviewed or been to California Monster Sushi yet? I didn't hear a thing about it anywhere until just the other day. They need to get the word out. The window (across from the Statesman on Chemekta) advertises $1 sushi.
ReplyDeleteSo far, I am incredibly impressed with Clockworks Cafe & Community Center. Good drinks, small food menu with quality ingredients, very comfortable & inviting ambiance. Huge improvement over The Blue Pepper! Plus, it's run by a non-profit, Culture Shock Community Project.
ReplyDeleteAnyone tried the new place called Habanero over on Center Street? I noticed it the other day tucked between the US Market and that bridal shop on the corner of Center and Hawthorne. I think it's a restaurant, anyway. And if it is, it sounds awesome -- I love me some spicy food!
ReplyDeleteI also recently experienced the new restaurant called Girabaldi's -- in the old La Primavera building in West Salem. I don't know if the two have any relation except that they are/were both Mexican food. I wrote a review of my experience at Urban Spoon, I'll spare the re-post here.
Anon, Are you by any chance guitar4me? If you are, I think a re-post here would be welcomed by most. Your reviews are always insightful, informative and well written. The more exposure, the better.

ReplyDeleteThere’s a new frozen yogurt bar on Lancaster called Sweet Papaya. It’s owned by Sam Koizumi (Kyoto’s).They have 8 machines w/16 flavors in all. There are at least 2 no sugar added flavors daily. Toppings include lots of fresh fruit choices along w/ the usual suspects like nuts, candy pieces and cookie crumbles. I understand they also have a Belgian waffle that can be added to the yogurt cup. Prices average about $4-$4.50 per trip per person. It’s all self serve. Basically you take a cup upon entering, add your yogurt flavors, then any toppings you like from the toppings bar. Then they weigh the cup and charge you by weight. Be careful it’s easy to fill that baby up, but you’ll never finish it if you do. Self serve can cause over indulgence (as in your eyes can be bigger than your stomach!). My son and I loved it and will be back again.

Taco Time on South Commercial is closed. Its neighbor The Grind Coffee Shop has signs in their windows that they are closing on July 31, and that a Hawaiian restaurant is taking over the space.
ReplyDeleteAlso in downtown Salem near the old Jonathan's, the convenience store has a sign in their window advertising "Chelsea's Place" serving sandwiches. I do not think this has any connection to the former Chelsea's restaurants that were in Salem for many years.
Lastly, the old Chad's Restaurant on 12th Street is now Don's Cafe as noted above, but who is "Don"? Is it Don Uselman from White's Restaurant on South Commercial?
Oh, no! I'm sad that Taco Time closed, that was my favorite guilty treat!
ReplyDeleteAnd to the previous anonymous, I remember when Kyoto's was down South here and Sam Koizumi got upset with me for bringing in my own Korean chopsticks and speaking Spanish with the cook.
That self-serve frozen yogurt sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteI stopped by the Soba Asian Bistro's S. Commercial location a couple of weeks ago and there was a sign in the window that said "temporarily closed".
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried Maynard's Bakery yet?
ReplyDeleteI love Sweet Papaya, the new yogurt place. Yum! So great on hot summer days!
ReplyDeleteAs for Maynard's.... I walked in once, took a look around, was dismayed by what I saw, and promptly left. A coworker was braver than I and actually ate there. Her review: "I think they heated up a Lean Cuisine and put it on a paper plate!!" Not impressed!
A Sweet Papaya downtown would be great!
ReplyDeleteAnyone know what's happening at the old Wild Pear location on River Road? I've seen some activity over the last couple of weeks, but it's unclear what the folks are up to and there's no "coming soon" type of sign...
ReplyDeleteYes up Tim Thai Cuisine (S Salem) is open, but Soba in the same location is now closed. I think the Soba on State Street is still open.
ReplyDeleteBakery D'Amour is now closed for good.
ReplyDeleteRe: Bakery D'Amour
ReplyDeleteSlow service, poor service, inconsistent quality, order errors and marginal value are each things that can kill a restaurant if left unaddressed. Together they are a death knell. RIP!
The bakery rocked, the restaurant NOT SO MUCH. I will miss the little eclairs and lemon tarts. Now what will I do for a bakery?
ReplyDeleteI also loved their wait staff.
R.I.P.
I will really miss the cinnamon rolls and coffee after my morning meetings!
ReplyDeleteI hear the Old Jonathan's location is going to be the "Star of India" and that Allesandro's is being taken over by Venti's? Any truth to this?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I haven't heard about the Old Jonathan's, but I did hear that Venti's did consider (and rule out) the Alessandro's location. Today I noticed a "for lease" sign on the Antique shop across from Cascade Baking Co. on State. Seems like a promising location for someone.
ReplyDeleteRocking back a few comments to July - is there actually a Hawaiian place in S. Salem on Commercial now?
ReplyDeleteJeff, I'm not sure which comment you're referring to. There is a Wild Pineapple BBQ place on the south end, but it's just off of 12th.
ReplyDeleteAck! The Alessandro's comment scared me! Our Soroptimist club meets there 3 times a month and finding a new meeting place that most can agree on is always a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the "cocktails" at Spoons mentioned under Notable Changes above. I called to clarify---there has been no change---they still only have beer and wine.
ReplyDeleteDDD
Thanks for the correction triple D! I was sure I had heard directly from Spoons, but now I can't find that (imagined?) email.
ReplyDeleteKandN, Perhaps it had to do with the fact that they've started a Happy Hour Tuesday-Saturday. The fellow who answered the phone indicated it was from 3:30-5pm which differs from an earlier notice that said it was from 4-6. (Oh well :-)

ReplyDeleteRocking back a few comments to July - is there actually a Hawaiian place in S. Salem on Commercial now?
------------------------------------------------
Taco Time on South Commercial is now closed. Remodeling has been taking place for a few weeks now, but no official Hawaiian place has opened in either the old Taco Time or the for The Grind coffee shop.
It looks like whatever is opening is taking up the entire building.
The former gas station between Shell and Dutch Bros. on Wallace Road in West Salem is going to be a Hawaiian Time (authentic plate lunch). Locations in Eugene, Portland and Oregon City.
ReplyDeleteAnyone tried the drive-through hot dog kiosk called Hut Dogs in the Chevron parking lot on Wallace and Glen Creek road in West Salem (formerly Some Like It Hot coffee kiosk)?
ReplyDeleteI stopped by and spoke with the owner of Orupa today. Looks like we have a couple more weeks to wait for its opening.
ReplyDeleteDid he say why?
ReplyDeleteAnon, The location is still a work in progress.

Anon (11/17/10 8:09 AM), Where is Robert's Crossing? Let's check it out!
ReplyDeleteChuck, Robert's Crossing in on River Rd South, close to Illahee in the old Robert's Store.
ReplyDeleteN and I drove by tonight. The place was all lit up at 9PM, several cars in the parking lot, a no minors sign on the downstairs, back door with people smoking outside. The front has a long length of butcher paper over the window, but we couldn't see anyone in that part of the building. I couldn't find them online or on DEX.
Anon, good news about Cafe 680. Breakfast is a smart move with the motels in that area.
Prudence Uncorked has fired Chef Mujib Simms, and according to their their Facebook page, the new chef is "Jes Moreno" (Jesse? Jessica?). Anyone know anything about the new person?
ReplyDelete3-D
Mom and Dad stopped in at Papa DiVino the other day and found that it is under new ownership. I haven't received an e-mail since the last one saying that they were staying open.
ReplyDeleteCapital Dog is no more. The new owners look to be opening up a Dessert shop. Called "Lil's Cupcake Cafe" or something along those lines. Just a heads up!
ReplyDeleteTriple D, I understand we'll being hearing news soon. :)
ReplyDeleteTracylee, It's good someone was able to take over.

Roberts Crossing info posted 11/30/2010 3:36 PM PST on Statesmanjournal.com Roberts Crossing restaurant opened recently on 3635 River Road S. The restaurant, opened by Jim and Chris Glodt, has a dining room, bistro area and lounge called The Locker. The winter menu offers comfort food, according to spokeswoman Maralene Oullette. The menu will change with the seasons and offer locally available offerings. The restaurant is in the 1915 Roberts General Store Building. The spot formerly was the home of the Wild Pear. Roberts Crossing is closed Tuedays. The rest of the week, The Locker is open 3-10 p.m., and the dining room and bistro are open from 4-10 p.m. Call: (503) 584-1035.
ReplyDeleteRe: Roberts Crossing. I spoke with the Glodts yesterday. Chris says a lunch menu is soon to follow, hopefully within the next few weeks.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the story behind Two Doors Down? Why did they close?
ReplyDeleteStephanie, I think it had to do with their purchase of the 2(?) Cafe Todays.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know why the Spaghetti Bowl closed and/or if only moved, to where, or will be back in better weather?
ReplyDeleteI heard Brice's folded their tent. Their phone #'s disconnected. Anybody have the scoop?
ReplyDeleteLooks like there is another restaurant going into the old Maxine's location (across from the statesman journal). I think it has been five or six different restaurants in the past couple years.
ReplyDeleteThe only way that location works is if they are exceptional food and do some expert level marketing.
I also noticed last week the new place going into old Maxine's (across from Statesman Journal)and wondered if this new restaurant would even last two months given the recent history of restaurants trying there. Also wondered if whoever was trying the latest restaurant knew of the recent failures there.
ReplyDeleteHi Anon, I don't know for sure about the short lived duration of the restaurants in this location, but I do have a theory:
ReplyDeleteIt's a relatively inexpensive spot to get into. Plus it's ready to go (kitchen, booths, tables, chairs), if you're not picky. My thought is that many of the people who have opened here, hoped to put little $ in and have a built-in clientele--with downtown workers nearby. Then perhaps due to lack of experience or the lackluster interior, they don't bring in return customers. At that location, I'd think you'd have to win them at your first contact.
Perhaps there's someone else out there with more knowledge that wants to weigh in.
Well there is very little foot traffic and poor signage. Plus dark windows. You could drive by ten times and never even know its there.
ReplyDeleteHard location
I did see they put up a new sign on the side of the building today. Had a big red happy face is all I recall.
Best of luck to them but it will take a huge effort to be successful there.
I think that Spaghetti Bowl only closed for the season. I presume (and hope!) they'll be back in the spring.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad about Capitol Dog: A friend recently told me they serve (or served) Eastern European food, and so we were planning on trying it soon. I had thought Capitol Dog was hot dogs.
ReplyDeleteWith all the Eastern European people living in the area, how come we don't have more restaurants serving food from that part of the world?
Looks like the Chula Vista at 260 liberty ST SE is closed.
ReplyDeleteChanges to check out in Independence.
ReplyDeleteWhile J Bella's is gone, I noticed a sign in the
window today: "coming soon, Mexican restaurant"
hmmmm...lots of them already here.
Also, would love to hear news on the brand new opening of Royal Thai restaurant in the rennovated opera house in the main block of downtown. I believe they opened as of this last week, but can't find any news online. They looked to have a number of tables full tonight when I passed by on my way home.
Hubby and I ate lunch at Royal Thai in Independence today .. at first glance, the place was nicely painted, clean and felt inviting in keeping with the historic feel of the old building. A cup of curry soup was offered as we browsed the menu ..we had Pad Phet and Pineapple Red Curry . both tasty and flavorful. Not as spicy as we like but an easy fix with the condiment tray delivered to our table.
ReplyDeleteLunch ranges from $6.50 to $8 depending on 'meat' selection; dinners were $9-13 .. pretty typical in what we've seen at Thai restaurants.
Our favorite is still Thai Beer but Royal Thai is definetly on the right track and should do well. Note: they've only been open one week!
Tried Tup Tim Thai Cuisine at 3860 Commercial Street, SE, Salem (in the plaza with the Baskin Robbins) and was very pleased. They've only been around since late September and I think it's been hard. If you like Thai, I encourage you to check them out. It would be nice to see them make a go of it. Prices are very reasonable.
ReplyDeleteAlso, recently tried Mekong Asian Take-Out in Keizer and was pleased with them as well. Find them in a small plaza behind the 76 station at 5151 River Road N, Keizer. It's take-out mostly so call to order! (503) 991-5503. You can pickup a menu when you pickup your order! Also very reasonable prices. Excellent homemade peanut sauce. Nice story at opening: http://keizertimes.com/?p=3181
Nipa Hut in Keizer? On yelp they posted that their Grand Opening was scheduled for February 5, but no one is answering the phone. Anyone know anything?

Triple D, I got a message from the owner confirming his scheduled G.O. date of 2/5. The posted phone number is a cell phone. I have not caught him here, but he did return my call when I left a message. Also, be warned not to trust the Mapquest map on Yelp. You’ll find yourself 2 or 3 miles north of your destination if you do. The real location is in the same strip mall as Thai Lotus and Goodwill in the 3800 block of River RD N. I can’t wait to try this place.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to to try Nipa Hut! I had a friend, years ago, who's mom made fantastic filapino food, and I've been trying to recreate that experience ever since!
ReplyDeleteNipa Hut will have a grand opening Saturday, Feb. 5 @ 3844 River Road N, Keizer. I hear they're on Facebook.
ReplyDelete"Salem Stinx" said, "Not sure where to post this, but in case anyone has not noticed, Thai E San is coming to Salem. Going in were Bigfoot is and now hopefully was. Great addition for Salem. I can only hope it is the whole restaurant and not split into two."
ReplyDeleteAccording to their facebook page, Nipa Hut (of Oregon) is open! I can't wait for pancit and lumpia. The pictures show the dining area is tastefully decorated and clean. Best of luck to this new business!
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to Smokin Swine's return? I saw the posts on their page which has since been taken off this site (at least the link has), so is that a sign that Ken and Kathy have cancelled their comeback? I'd be crushed -was so looking forward to that great food!
ReplyDeleteE-San Thai Cuisine is now open in the old Thai Fusion/Bigfoot location (3330 Commercial ST SE) and it’s a big improvement over the marginal and understandably defunct Thai Fusion! I had lunch there today with a very nice young fellow, Brian Greggs, who (to his credit) has taken it upon himself to be an informal liaison between Willamette University students and the Salem community. He’s recently initiated an on-campus newsletter in which he plans to bring attention to some of Salem’s restaurants and other points of possible interest. It reassures me to know the future rests in the hands of bright young people such as he.
ReplyDeleteWe both enjoyed our meals. I had their Phad Thai which was well executed. I found their “medium heat” to be a step below the norm. I will notch it up on my next meal there.
Commercial Street has progressed from only one good Thai place to three in just a few months. The economy may be struggling, but Salem’s restaurant scene is exploding!

Spotted the place on a post-lunch peregrination, so haven’t eaten here yet. The owner, Kenny, was very helpful with questions from a non-paying customer. Looks like an old fashioned soda fountain and Burger type set-up.
More to come when I’ve tried it!
Does anyone have any idea where I could get the recipe for the old Chelsea's that was in Salem for their Steak soup or maybe it was stew?My family used to drive from Albany to eat there and we loved this soup. Are there any former chefs around?Thank you
ReplyDeleteHere is a link that provides background on Chelsea's and mentions the steak soup along with the owners names.
ReplyDeletehttp://southworthjamesr.tripod.com/jean/Chelsea'sno_edited.htm
I found a listing on www.theultimates.com/white on Illahe Rd for the owners or you may try contacting Jean Southworth who wrote the message and included contact information. It may take a little legwork but it sounds like you're on a mission :-)
Good luck!
3-D
Oh man I miss that soup! Please let us know if you find it. A big bowl of soup and a huge slice of one of that amazing chocolate layered cake was the best dinner. I really miss Chelsea's....
ReplyDeleteChelsea's was a staple when I was growing up in the 70's/80's. Old school mid-west type restaurant back from when you could still enjoy a cigarette in a dining room without the health police having a coronary (nice pun!). Where can you do that now short of Wisconsin?
ReplyDeleteMy dad who was a great guy and valued his mid-west roots, would get a slice of pie and a cup of coffee to cap the dinner. It wasn't my favorite place, but I was sad when they closed. Thinking back now, it makes me especially nostalgic.
I have this vague memory of a pot pie. I was young then and I've drank a lot over the past 25 years so my memory isn't what it should be.
Chelsea's steak soup was one of my favorites too. Would love the recipe if anyone finds it!
ReplyDeletePrudence Uncorked is closed http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20110328/UPDATE/110328026/-1
ReplyDeleteThis is too bad, as that location has had restaurants open for as long as I can remember.
That is a hard location. Not a good lay out and you are only going to be there if you specifically are going for the restaurant. I've heard good things about Prudence U. If they were downtown they would have done 10x the business.
ReplyDeleteJ. James struggled there and it was one of the better restaurants in Salem.
SWMBO and I checked out Taj Mahal buffet today. We’re usually not buffet folks, but we got there early and it was very good. Great Fruit and Salad bar as well as a good selection of Indian dishes. Can’t say if it would be as appetizing at 2:30PM as it was at 11:30AM, but the Nan bin was replenished three times while we were there. Of course they also have a broad array of menu items.
ReplyDeleteThe Old Mexican Grill (in the old Nipa Hut spot- 3844 River RD N) is scheduled to open next week according to the owner. She says they will offer American menu items also.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know happened to Nipa Hut, why they closed so soon after opening? I hadn't gotten the chance to try them yet, darn it.
ReplyDeleteBaskin-Robins on S. Commercial is closing as of today. The same folks are opening in a new location in West Salem. Sad to see them leave our neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they are closing the South Salem Baskin Robbins store, especially since Wednesday is the annual $.31 scoop night.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.baskinrobbins.com/
I thought it was weird that a self-serve frozen yogurt place is going in a couple of doors down from Baskin Robbins. Now as Paul Harvey says we have..."The rest of the story".
That's odd, they already have a BR in west Salem near Roth's and Starbucks.
ReplyDeleteThat's really sad. They've been there for a long long long time.
ReplyDeleteThe Quizno's on Lancaster by 5 Guys Burger & Fries is for sale, per this listing:
ReplyDeletehttp://salem.craigslist.org/bfs/2377402332.html
Plus this Cafe Restaurant is for sale in downtown Salem (no name listed):
http://salem.craigslist.org/bfs/2375732430.html
Anon 5/14 7:25 PM, I think the second craigslist offering looks a lot like Mission Mill Cafe.
ReplyDeleteVery sad to report that Mekong Asian Take-out located at 5151 River RD N is closed. It had some of the best of its three cuisine offerings in town.
ReplyDeleteAl-Aqsa Fine Mediterranean Cuisine is now open. It is where the salad bar place was on South Commercial in the same parking lot as Toadally Coffee and Privet European store.
ReplyDeleteThe owner is already planning a second location on State Street by the Cue Ball.
Lots of meat and non-meat options, with reasonable prices. Nice folks running the place.
Sounds good---does anyone know how Al Aqsa translates?
ReplyDeleteOn a separate note, Crooked House Bistro no longer serves lunch nor has their mid-week prix fixe menu.
3-D
3-D, Many, many links come up. Looks like it may be an ancient, holy location in Jerusalem/Palestine, with a rich, contentious history.
ReplyDeleteUnconfirmed rumor has it that 5 Guys Burgers and Fries is coming soon to the corner of Commercial and Vista SE (The old Izzy's location.)
ReplyDeleteIt's true. I hope they kept the back way out onto Vista.
ReplyDeleteKandN. I walked over to Vista and Commercial this morning and it looks like the Vista entrance will be preserved.
ReplyDeleteSWMBO and I tried Al-Aqsa Fine Mediterranean Cuisine today. It was good. I like the people too. It's nice to have another Mediterranean option in Salem.
I am so VERY sad about Mekong Asian Take-out! Their location was a poor choice -- probably lower overhead. They should have been in a place to catch much more lunch traffic and might have provided more seating by a table or two or an outside picnic table -- I do hope we can find them again sometime.
ReplyDeleteOn another note: The Downtown Market at 145 Liberty Street, NE now has a nice Middle Eastern menu. They have appetizers, sandwiches, and even a dinner menu. Seating is in a balcony area over the market. It is Lebanese/Greek as stated by the owner. Have not tried much yet. This could be a third Mid-East option. I look forward to trying Al-Aqsa Fine Mediterranean Cuisine soon. I'm anxious for Salem to have a good option similar to Nicholas of Portland!
Al Aqsa actually translates into "dome of the rock" in Arabic, it's derived from the Dome Of the Rock mosque in Jerusalem.
ReplyDeleteNew Mexican restaurant "El Maguey" at 260 Liberty ST SE. (The old Chula Vista location.) The lunch I had suggest regional nuances and was a treat unique in my experience. The folks are originally from the town of San Filipe Chilarillo in the Mexican State of Guanajuato, but have been in the restaurant business in Georgia for ten years. I’m anxious to see what other menu surprises are in store.
ReplyDeleteAzteca Bakery 2138 Lancster DR NE Suite 121. Great Molotes lunch there today. Also, right next door in Suite 124: La Brisa Restaurant. Haven't tried this one yet, but it looks interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know what is going into the former Cafe Noir space? They have blacked out all the windows so I am assuming a bar or nightclub? Haven't seen any liquor license postings.
ReplyDeleteWho in Salem/Keizer, or surrounding area, makes a Green Chile Cheeseburger? (I didn't know where else to put this. Maybe we need a general question or what's on your mind thread?)
ReplyDeleteChuck Bradley,
ReplyDeleteCook's Illustrated Summer Grilling 2011 Special Issue has a recipe for a Green Chile Burger, referring to it as maybe the best burger that you have never heard of. You can buy a copy here http://www.cooksillustrated.com/bookstore/detail.asp?PID=499 or at a local bookstore like Borders, or I could scan the recipe and email it to you as a pdf file. Let me know your preference.
Chuck,
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, the West Salem Safeway's butcher counter makes a really good green chili and cheddar patty. All it needs if for you to grill it.
Thanks Amber and Anon. I'm hoping to find a local eatery where I can walk in and order one made with a fresh hand spanked patty.
ReplyDeleteAssume you've checked The Ram, Rockin' Roger's and Willamette Burger...
ReplyDeleteor J's 99 Grill in Monmouth or Cafe 22.
ReplyDeleteNew (and excellent) Hot Dog Cart downtown! NE corner of Liberty and Court STS. Deanie's Wienies. Features Hebrew National Kosher all Beef Dogs and New England Style, Grill toasted Buns. I loved 'em. Well worth a try.
ReplyDeleteSaw this ad on craigslist: PIZZA SHOP FOR SALE (Downtown Salem) And wondered where it is? http://salem.craigslist.org/bfs/2496564602.html
ReplyDeleteThe Grub Shack food truck is now more or less permanently set up at Capitol Auto Group on the NW corner of Mission and 25th streets SE. It is amazing! I think today was my 2nd or 3rd visit. They always use the highest quality ingredients and much care in preparation. The values of their "specials" are off the charts! Today I had Pesto linguine served in a biodegradable container made of recycled materials. The Pasta was "to the tooth" perfect, tossed in an wonderful hand crafted Pesto Sauce with Cherry Tomatoes and Zucchini Squash then liberally dusted with grated Parmesan Cheese and garnished with a sprig of Sweet Basil. Oh the side was a nice piece of honest-to-gosh minced-Garlic Bread. Sound like a $20 lunch? It was five bucks! Now that floats my boat!
ReplyDelete(Note: To be sure of location, on any given day, call Mack or Marilyn @ 503-851-5560)
Papas G'ss Blacklight Bar is soon to open at the corner of Marion and Church Streets. They are waiting for OLCC approval. I'm told their menu will include Grilled Meats; Pulled Pork, Sausages, Ribs, Beef, Chicken and Sausages. Stay tuned more to come.
ReplyDeleteWell, if this is true, I guess I better hurry up and use that Groupon for Church Street Pizza. I really do love their pizza, one of my favorites in town. Will be disappointed if the recipe changes.
ReplyDeleteIt has been reported, on another site, that the "temporary closing" of the Full House Asian restaurant at 440 State Street is now permanent. The author claims to have spoken to the owner who sited "the economy" as the reason. They will continue to have a booth at the Salem Farmer's Market, according to the report.
ReplyDeleteAm I to understand that Church Street Pizza will be closing? I too have a Groupon!
ReplyDeletePIZZA SHOP FOR SALE (Downtown Salem)
ReplyDeleteJudging from personally having been there many times, the ad describes the contents. My money is on "Church Street Pizza" as the business for sale.
The Midnight Bar & Grill is now open at 3960 Center ST NE. All individual menu items under $5, $.50 Tacos and $.50 Wings!
ReplyDeleteAlso, Amecameca recommended El Rinconisto, a new authentic Mexican place at 2809 Market ST NE. I tried it today and think it has promise. Amecameca liked it. He has been my spirit guide to Mexican food for some time and has rarely lead me astray. When he talks, I listen.
Cafe Noir former location will be Papa G's Blacklight Bar.
ReplyDeleteTwo new Independence places for Authentic Mexican food: #1 Carniceria Mi Casita is a bodega/Carniceria with a Gill inside. It's good, as these places almost always are. (834 N. Main ST) #2 Jimenez Mexican Restaurant opened Friday and wraps fantastic hecho a mano Tortillas around its Tacos. Limited but good menu. (286 N. Main ST)
ReplyDeleteJust saw in the Statesman Journal that Morton's Bistro in West Salem is closing. Very sad.-guitar4me
ReplyDeleteTwo comments: 1. Los Yonics Mexican Restaurant is open at 1391 Broadway NE. Good Mex-Amer food and huge portions. Great service. 2. Venti's new Commercial ST location soft opening is today at 4PM.
ReplyDeleteChuck, about "1. Los Yonics Mexican Restaurant is open at 1391 Broadway NE. Good Mex-Amer food and huge portions. Great service. "
ReplyDeleteIs this the old 4 Caminos Mexican Restaurant? Did 4 Caminos close or is this just a name change?
Also in Keizer, the El Charrito Family Mexican Restaurant (503) 390-1474 5458 River Rd N, in the same parking lot with Albertson's and Rite Aid has new owners and maybe a new name. I went by twice this week, one time they had a sign up mentioning the new ownership, and when I drove by later in the week, a sign company was working on the old sign.
The On The Rocks sports bar is now The Dugout Sports Bar. It is in the same parking lot as Platinum Sports & Fitness, Thai Lotus, Little Caesar's Pizza, and The Old Mexico Grill. They have a website here: http://keizerdugout.com/
Anon,
ReplyDeleteYes it is the old 4 Caminos venue. The owners are the Guzman family and, although I can’t say for sure, I don’t think they were associated with 4 Caminos.
Thanks for the word on El Charrito. I shall miss the old owner’s wonderful Nopales con Puerco dish with Prickly Pear Cacti. It was fantastic!
Chuck
Anon,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the old El Charrito venue. It's now Mariscos La Sirenita. SWMBO, Drew Thornton (our grandson) and I tried it today. I recommend their Camarones a la Diabla. It's unlike any I've had before. The Sauce was not as hot as I expected, but was incredibly flavorful. Carol liked her Shrimp Taco and Drew said his Chicken Enchiladas were excellent. Their Salad sides are several cuts above the norm for Mexican places too. It's a little pricey ($35 for 3 lunches, tip included). Check ‘em out. Don’t want to turn this into a full blown review. I’ll shut up now.
It is rumored that Smile BBQ at 635 Chemeketa is struggling. They have great Japanese and Korean food at reasonable prices. And they are wonderful people. Let's chat 'em up and see if we can't give them a much needed boost. BTW, I recommend their Galbi dinner.
ReplyDeleteThere is activity at the failed Full House location at 440 State ST. Does anyone know who's going in there?
ReplyDeleteNo Chuck, but our neighboring booth at the Salem Saturday Market are the previous owners after Hainan Orchid. They just sold it.I will ask them on Saturday and post.
ReplyDeleteThe old Full House is a great location but it is going to take a lot of money to renovate.
ReplyDeleteThat plus outstanding food to get people in the door.
Hopefully not another generic, undercapitalized Asian restaurant.
Does anyone know if Taco Bell still sells Chilito's? Flour shell with fatty micro ground beef floating in a sea of liquid cheese like goo?
ReplyDeleteMan, I loved those in college.
PaPa G's Blacklight Bar is moving into the old Cafe Noir.
ReplyDeleteChuck I talked the the former owners of 440 State ST. They have no idea what is going in there.
ReplyDeleteThanks mama2dylan. I'll keep an eye on it and report.
ReplyDeleteFrom Papa Di Vino:
ReplyDeleteTo All:
We are sending this notice to let our customers know that we are closing/selling our shop. As you know, Sarah and I recently retired and thought this would be a great retirement project. However, the amount of time and the hours of operation have been more of a commitment than we anticipated. It has been hard to dedicate this amount of time away from our grandkids and family. It truly has been an exciting adventure and we have enjoyed the many wonderful new acquaintances. We will miss you all!
Our plan is to close the shop by September 30th. We would like to provide the month of September as an opportunity for everyone with a gift certificate a chance to redeem them as soon as possible.
Also, if anyone is interested in purchasing our shop or any of the equipment, please contact us at Papa di vino’s or call us at 503-364-3009.
We want to thank you for your support these past 9 months, and we appreciate your patience while we learned about wine and the wine business. Quite an experience!
All the best to you all!

Also the Hawaiian Time location behind Popeye's Chicken on Mission Street next door to Anytime Fitness looks really close to opening. A sign is up, & they have a drive thru.

Now through 8/28/2011 Mickey D's has free small cups of coffee. Not the best coffee in town, but hey, can you beat the price?

The sign has gone up on the new building/strip mall home of Five Guys Burger & Fries on South Commercial & Vista. The opening must be soon.

Chuck, the name of the new restaurant at 440 State St. in downtown Salem is Rainbow Chinese Restaurant.
ReplyDeleteThe menu includes dim sum dishes such as steamed Char Sew Bow (pork barbecue-stuffed dumplings), Shew My (shrimp and pork stuffed dumplings) and shrimp Ha Gow (shrimp dumplings).
The restaurant, co-owned by Mei Wu and Xiao Wu, also serves a selection of Cantonese dishes.
The restaurant is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
(503) 362-9000.
mama2dylan. Isn't it great? I tried several of their Dim Sum menu items last week. It's a very good thing to have a second option for this. I wrote a review and submitted it to eatsalem management, so I won't steal my own thunder here. I'll just say; try it the first chance you get! Thanks for keeping your ear to the ground on this place for me.
ReplyDeleteI know this is late, but I thought of Chuck's Green Chili Burger question this evening when a friend ordered it at My Place in N. Salem this afternoon - report - it was so so. I didn't taste it myself, green chilis aren't my thing, but I asked for EatSalem! :-)
ReplyDeleteAll American Frozen Yogurt in the Salem Center Food Court is out of business, as of Friday night. If you have an Entertainment Book with the coupon for the free small bowl of yogurt, it is too late to use in Salem.
ReplyDeleteThis extremely helpful section has become unwieldy and is in need of a re-vamp---perhaps the top section at least could be kept up-to-date so that the "New openings" are more current than one year ago---maybe by month? Perhaps the older items could somehow be re-arranged---alphabetical list? (& include opening/closing date or ???) Also this is a perfect example of where a "jump to last comment" option would help immensely. Just my $00.02.
ReplyDeleteDDD
Thanks, DDD
ReplyDeleteI tend to do better at keeping things updated during the summer when I'm off. I'll definitely put this on my to do list.
Brick Brothers, on Browning SE, now offers an in-house-baked option for its Pizza (was bake-at-home only) and it also delivers, if you so desire.
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Break Billiards and Brew (formerly Sharky's) on Commercial SE, is under new management/ownership and will open tomorrow with a new menu including Brick Brothers Pizza.
You're a gem! Much easier to read already. Maybe we should poll the troops to find out exactly how much "history" is necessary and relegate the rest to a separate category. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteDDD
Anything going on with Off Center Cafe? I thought I saw if for sale on craigslist a month or so ago. When for a late breakfast today and they were closed at noon, though their hours said they should be open until 2:30pm.
ReplyDeleteGreat fix! I would vote for most recent post displayed first on all threads.
ReplyDeleteMy intent was to make this change to the newest dining scene post, but guess who wasn't paying close attention?
ReplyDeleteOh well. This one has obviously had the most traffic.
I have no doubt, that as soon as he finds the time, Salem Man will find a way to do that, Chuck. :)
Thanks KandN. That's great!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that Young's Teriyaki Closed. Does anybody have the scoop?
Chuck,
ReplyDeleteThere's a rumor that Love Love Teriyaki is coming to that location.
Right you are KandN! The coming soon sign is in the window. The workmen had no comment about an anticipated opening date.
ReplyDeleteBizznaga 303 Grill! A new eatery at the hapless 114 S. Main ST in Independence. American fare menu. Light and bright. Same owners as Lenora's Ghost just up the block. Maybe the third time will prove to be the charm in this location!
ReplyDelete"Rockin' Roger's coming soon!" reads the marquee at the old Eola Inn on HWY 22 in West Salem.
ReplyDeleteInteresting . . .
ReplyDeletere Anon 11/7- Off Center is closed Mondays
ReplyDeleteTaj Mahal has a website, too: http://www.tajmahalsalem.com
ReplyDeleteI would know, because I wrote it for them!
Thanks, Egan :) It's on our "Restaurants Online" page.
ReplyDeleteThe new NE Daynight Donuts location at 2234 Fairgrounds RD opened yesterday. I stopped by today and venue is new from the studs out. It's a beautiful and spacious store with the best Donuts in Salem as well as a big Yogurt and topping selection, gourmet Coffee and Biscuits and Gravy
ReplyDeleteSpoke with the owner of Al-Aqsa today. He says the State ST location should be open in about two weeks.
ReplyDeleteThere's no apparent activity at the old Jack Rabbit Espresso location on 13rh ST SE, where a Mexican place is rumored to be coming soon.
Lots of contractor vehicles and activity at the old Eola Inn where Rockin’ Rogers is anticipated.
I don't think that Spoons serves dinner anymore. When I drive by at night, the lights look out to me.
ReplyDeleteI chatted with someone from Rock N' Rogers and they expect to open at the old Eola Inn location in early December. The pool table is gone & they will have video poker.
The old Jack Rabbit Espresso does having some work going on. I see a sign up for Monarca.
Gilgamesh Brewing now has a tap room in the Reed Opera House. Their hours are not posted (it was closed about 3 PM today) and it looks as if their food may be provided by Venti's. At least they have Venti's signs on the wall and there does not appear to be a Kitchen facility.
ReplyDeleteJust read on Craigslist apparently Super Pho on State Street is going out of business.
ReplyDelete“Due to personal family issues, I need to get out of the business...Up for bid is my restaurant at 383 State street downtown Salem. Next to the Brick. Everything is updated and ready for any type of restaurant. deep fryer, char broiler grill, refrigerators, freezer...soda machine. pretty much a turn key operation for any food you may want to bring into downtown. So the deal is,...take a look, shoot me an offer and I will contact the top few bidders for more details. rent is currently at about 2k which includes all utilities...EVEN. Stayton’s The Lovin' Oven, purveyors of premium baked goods (Purportedly the real source of most of Konditorei’s offerings) will no longer have lunches available and will be curtailing their hours as of December 9th, 2011, in their 3rd ST location. The proprietors will be opening a discount grocery store in Stayton Plaza named "Economy Grocery" in which they will offer a selection of their Desserts six days a week.
ReplyDeleteThese are both unsubstantiated rumors. Perhaps someone could shed some light as to their veracity.
ReplyDelete1. References in reviews, on other sites, suggest that Church Street Pizza is under new ownership/management.
2. I heard, from a questionable source, that White's has sold to the owners of the Ritz Diner.
Does anyone know if either of both of these is/are true?
Church St was for sale on Craiglist a while back. When I questioned Ian (the owner) he conformed that it was indeed for sale.
ReplyDeleteThis was posted on their facebook page early this am- so it sounds like new owners.
ReplyDeleteChurch St. Pizza
It's on at the break of dawn at church st today, we are already hard at work on today's Chefs Special.
How does Asian Pears, Blue Cheese and Spinach over our Garlic Infused Olive Oil base sound?
Sounds pretty amazing to me. So drop in, say hello to Breeann and Eric and have a slice of the new hotness.
-demitri
Yep and their FB info says;

Chuck Bradley wrote "2. I heard, from a questionable source, that White's has sold to the owners of the Ritz Diner. Does anyone know if either of both of these is/are true?"
ReplyDeleteIf this happened it would be a little ironic. Don who owns White's & Don's Restaurant on 12th Street, owned The Ritz at one point, and sold it after he got White's going again. White's has been for sale for the past two years, with the asking price dropping by $200,000 during that time.
This website still has the business for sale:
http://www.restaurants-for-sale.com/newsite/rro/listingview.asp?id=17014
$975,000 asking price + $6,000 a month for rent.
Apparently Church St Pizza did change hands. I listed an item on Craigslist and the person who answered the ad was a "Jason" new owner of Church St Pizza. He sounds like a nice guy. He assured me that they kept the same crust recipe. And his son works for him for free!
ReplyDeleteThe Pizza Hut on S. Commercial is gone. I mean building and all. Nothing left but a concrete slab and burning memories of appalling service and mediocre food. Let this be a testimony to how well absentee ownership (an educated guess here) works in the food service industry. I'll not shed a tear for this one's demise.
ReplyDeleteChuck wait! Don't spread falsities :) This Pizza Hut razing was of particular interest to me as I live directly across the street. Smelly old Pizza Hut has been our main view from our big 20-foot windows ever since we moved in. When I came home last Thursday and saw the restaurant flattened, I cheered.
ReplyDeleteToo soon.
They're building a new Pizza Hut right back up. We are in for some noisy construction months ahead, and Salem is not losing a Pizza Hut location.
-guitar4me
That is too bad. I used to work right across the street from that Pizza Hut and it was an eyesore.
ReplyDelete
