The Grind Opens, Covers Up the Bad Ass

Down south on Commercial the location which used to be occupied by Bad Ass Coffee has been taken over by a new cafe called The Grind Coffee Co. Temporary signs have been put up over the Bad Ass signs to the relief of parents with young children everywhere. I was in there yesterday and noticed the stuffed donkey disappeared and the palm trees have been removed. The Grind is locally owned and operated by a friendly young gal who took my order yesterday. She told me that she had worked in coffee houses for a few years and finally got this chance to be the boss. She was very friendly but if you go in there, be prepared to be asked your name to be put on a frequent customer list. Not just your first name, your entire name. It was explained as being a substitute for the coffee cards that end up in your wallet with only a couple of stamps on them. A 12oz cup of coffee here is $1.25, there's plenty of seating and a wide screen TV. If you support local, this is one that should be on your list.

Their frequent customer list reminds me of a video rental business we used to go to regularly. You didn't have to keep your receipts or have a punch card, but every time you rented your 10th movie it was automatically free.

After giving my name, I get the feeling I'm going to see something in the mail from that place.

Maybe they'll attach a coupon?

I see that someone still has a stick up their a$$ about the name "Bad Ass". Get over it already.

The term is common and the continued hangups about the name are stupid and childish. The business is out of business here. But cover your eyes if you travel south of Salem, as four other Bad Ass locations are located there.

I bet you blush when you use the term "poopy".

I feel my iq drop every time you whine about "Bad Ass". What do you call a female dog?

Actually the owner of this place used to run the Coffee In Motion until the original owner Josh took it back over from her after it was doing horrible business. My guess is it won't last that long.

Yeah, I went to Coffee in Motion and saw her there now that you say that! So why is she saying that she DIDNT own it? You can do a buisness search and see for yourself. She seems nice enough but it makes me think twice now about going back.

It was a casual conversation that I had with the owner of The Grind, notes were not taken. She did not know I write for this blog. It may have been assumption on my part that she had not owned anything previously. She had said that she had run coffee houses in the past and I would have remembered had she mentioned owning Coffee in Motion.

Natalie is the name of the "friendly gal" that owns and runs The Grind Coffee Co. and she is a wonderful, personable individual who really shows an interest in her customers, great service and the community.
Let's not get wrapped up in the minutiae and honor her for her amazing efforts at breathing life back into a coffee shop.
She deserves your attention and you deserve to get great coffee and service with a smile...which is exactly what Natalie will give you each time you walk in the door or drive up to the window.
Isn't that what's important?

I'm confused mostly because if you want my patronage I would expect you to be nice and smile and pretend to be my friend I mean it is just coffee. It's simple she, Natalie, is on record as owning Coffee in Motion. Thanks to the other blogger I looked it up. So I think the question is ethics. The place looks the same mostly and let's not get wrapped up in her "honor" if she puts out false statements about herself to customers and in the paper for goodness sake, where's the honor in that?

I met a friend at the Grind earlier today (well technically yesterday) and I was very impressed by the service, the quality of the beverages, the selection, and the cleanliness.

It's a lovely, comfortable hangout with nice drink options and free wifi. I will definitely keep it on top of my list for a place to meet someone on that side of town.

While there are a lot of people out there having tough times and waiting for their "bailouts' Natalie is out busting her ass. She is getting into a competitive business during one of the worst recessions ever. Yet, you walk in there and she is working hard, has a smile on her face, and is providing great service. Its people like her that will help get things turned around. I hope everyone who reads this stops by The Grind and see's what I am talking about. Its good coffee, good food, and good people. We all deserve a positive atmosphere and The Grind provides that. Keep doing your thing Natalie there are a lot us behind you !!!

Not to detract from this girl's amazing service at all, but yeah, the 'Bucks does care like that. They know their regular's names and drinks. But I can't stand them, so places like this get my business!

I have not found a better place in South Salem to hold a meeting outside my home office. Coffee is good, free wifi, service is excellent and Natalie always greets me by name. That always impresses me!

NIce service but a little yuppie with the laptops, the electronics, possible noise or white noise, the art and boutique. Too stimulating.
