Chain Chicken

Have you seen the new Popeye's Fried Chicken going up along Mission St. near the new Carl's Jr. Every time I turn around, it seems like more greasy chains are coagulating along our commuter arteries. If you haven't eaten there before, Popeye's is a Louisiana style fried chicken chain with your usual assortment of combos including cole slaw, biscuits, beans and mashed potatoes. I've tried not to talk much about the mega chain industry, which seems to be thriving in Salem, but this is a franchise that was talked about in the Salem wish list post. This place is pretty tempting for a chain, but if you can resist, there are some local options that are competitively priced. Roth's grocery store sells fried chicken by the piece at the deli counter and the price is cheaper than KFC. They also have a wider selection of sides and you can pick up a gallon of milk for the kids.

  1. Yes, I did see that sign . . .
When that area was in it's first stages, I was so hopeful that it would be different from all the other strip mall type places around town.
I'd rather have a rotisserie chicken for a quick dinner. I don't know if it's that much healthier, but I don't notice the never ending thirstiness I experience after eating the alternative.

  3. Popeyes is terrific - try the Red Beans & Rice. I'll be happy not to have to drive up to the TA at the Donald/Aurora exit.

And I'm sure all those state workers downtown will appreciate having another lunch option nearby.

  4. Hmm, my post didn't show up - is it being moderated?

Anyway, I approve of Popeyes - the Red Beans & Rice is terrific and this will beat having to drive up to the T/A Truckstop at the Donald exit.

State workers should appreciate all the new food options that are showing up relatively near to the downtown core.

BTW, Fast Eddie's Pizza, in the same development... is just pizza. Nothing special.

  5. Roth's has an 8-piece chicken deal (baked or fried) for $5.99 through Tuesday December 16th. Much cheaper than KFC and they use local chicken. GO LOCAL!

  6. Jeff, I've always wondered about Fast Eddie's. You are the first person to mention that place on this site. Come to think of it, you're the first person I've ever heard of eating there.

  8. I cant stand KFC's fried chicken anymore - I'd much rather have WinCo's it's always less greasy and SO much cheaper...

Never had Popeye's...I'm sure I'm gonna have to be a sucker and try it, at least once... :)

  9. I heard from many colleagues in Virginia that Popeye's is good eats, but never tried it myself. They are the "Official Chicken of the Washington Redskins" so it can't be that bad.

  11. I attend Court St. Christian Church @ 17th and Court St - and live in Stayton. I'm usually driving in at least twice a week so I tend to check out all the food alternatives between those two locations.

The Muchos Gracias was pretty good food for Mexican Fast Food, but the service was atrocious. I saw one potential customer leave because nobody even noticed her standing in front of the register.

  12. Point taken, Anonymous. That was my reason for not trying it when I was in Virginia. :-)

  14. Popeyes- yummy mashed potatoes with their glorious spicy gravy. My hubs loves the spicy chicken strips and dirty rice. Good lord, I can feel my arteries cringing, but It. Tastes. So. Good. I feel no guilt for it not being local as there's nothing else like it in Salem.

Fast Eddies- cheaps eats, cheap quality. On par with Little Ceasars, but Salem-only, so there ya go for you localites.

  17. My husband went to Popeye's chicken Wednesday for lunch. He ordered the 3 piece with a side of mashed potatoes and a biscuit. They have regular or spicy recipe. He chose the regular, one wing, one thigh, one drumstick. It cost him $7.00. Heck, I can go to Winco and get the 8 piece meal deal for $7.98 w/ 2 sides & 4 rolls! My husband said the chicken was no better than Winco's. They only give you sauces if you ask for them or accept when they ask. My husband declined. Much to his dismay butter was not a part of the sauce deal so he received no butter/honey for his biscuit. The mashed potatoes did have lumps in them so either they are real or they add lumps to make them appear real or stand apart from KFC.

  18. What would y'all think of a rotisserie chicken restaurant? Downtown. With a large assortment of hot and cold sides. Whole chicken family meals with brought to your car curbside take-out?

  19. Anon, Reminds me of a brief thought I had during our Little League years--that someone should open a place called Casseroles R Us. Every night they'd have two choices of casseroles to choose from at their drive-up window. Plus you could buy that gallon of milk, garlic bread and a salad.

  20. Haven't we had rotisserie chicken restaurants in Salem before (Boston Market & Kenny Rogers)? If you want casseroles try Supper Suppers (Take n’ Bake) on South Commercial.
    http://www.supersuppers.com/index.php

They have entrees, sides, desserts, and breakfast items prepared in their Grab n’ Go freezer—ready for you to pick up and cook. They can be served for dinner tonight or put in the freezer to enjoy later.
