Jr's Taqueria

Curb appeal is very important when choosing a restaurant for me. I like to think that outside appearance is a good indicator of how good a restaurant is going to be. It might also reveal clue's about cleanliness and taste. Jr's Taqueria along Winter Street NE has a quaint clean appearance upon initial drive by. You can't miss the modest logo on the sign of a sombrero headed hombre waving you in. You should give this place a try if you haven't yet. The first thing you notice as you enter the dining room is the shine bouncing off spotless tables and floors. On a bright day, the surrounding windows offer a nice view of a NE street corner. Open enough that you might feel as if you were dining under a covered patio. The owners here have obviously taken great care to preserve an older store front and turn it into a real treasure in a city that is building strip malls faster than you can find a parking space downtown. The menu is simple with food ranging from $1.50 for a taco to around $6 to $7 for lunch including rice and beans. The carnitas are $6.75 and come with four homemade corn tortillas that are delicious all by themselves. Carnitas are chunks of pork served with cilantro, onion and sliced jalapenos. I don't know if you're supposed to scoop up the meat and toppings into the tortillas, but that's what I do. A squirt of green salsa on top and you're having a great lunch. So good you won't want it to end. For good or for bad, the portion leaves you wanting more but I would have felt this way no matter how high they piled it on my plate. Looking at the picture now, I guess I didn't realize, at the time, how much pork I actually ate. The service was quick and friendly insuring that I will be back to try more from their menu.

What are their hours? Do they take debit cards? Was the staff friendly?

Yes, they take debit cards. And they have Mexican Coke, always a treat! And the staff is very nice.

I had Pepsi last time I was in Mexico and it was soooo good. I think it is because they use cane sugar...?

I can't stand soda in the states but the Mexican version of Pepsi is great (less sweet, not so acidic, less phosphorus).

Anyway, I have eaten at Jr's many times and taken the kids. The food is great and the service is good. If it wasn't so out of the way, I would eat there much more often.

Good authentic food. Plus telenovela's on the boob tube - which reminds me of Mexico.

The atmosphere was clean, bright and cheerfull. I had the small plates Sopes and Gorditos (both pork) and they were over-the-top good. I liked both salsas offered but really liked the Verde. It's too early to make this assessment, having only been here once, but I think the food quality is real close to The San Diego Taco Company which has heretofore been my top pick in Salem for order-at-the-counter Mex places. Can't wait to sample other menu items.

Our favorite mexican restaurant hands down, in Oregon,so far. Reasonably priced, with friendly competent service.

Ironic that someone just commented on this place. I happened through the neighborhood last week and had lunch. I had been to Jr's before and loved it, but completely forgot about it. I am not in this zone very often.

Anyway, I got the three hard shell taco combo with the marinated pork. Fantastic. The shells were warm and crisp. The pork was well cooked, tender and flavorful. The topper was the fresh made guacamole that came on the side. The whole meal was so good that I ordered a second batch.

I was craving their tacos all week and went back on Friday and had the three tacos and a tostada on the side.

Excellent food and very authentic. If they were in a more populous area they would be packed all the time. My only wish for this place would be a modelo or a corona.

Fairgrounds road in the neighborhood. You won't regret making the trip.

I think I just said it was on Fairgrounds when looking up a ways it says Winter. I am probably wrong.

This place is great. My favorite Mexican food restaurant in town. A little hard to find and very low-key, but really good. Staff always are very friendly as well. Very authentic. Everyone that I have sent over has loved it. If you have not been there and you like authentic Mex food, I highly recommend.
