Great Wall Buffet

My family has been really supportive of this blog and bringing them back to the Great Wall Buffet on south Commercial street across from Buster's was a true test of their loyalty to it. I don't want to get into details but the last time we were there, things didn't go so well. This time we were just hungry and looking for a place that I hadn't blogged about yet. The hope was that the food would be considerably better than last time or there might be something we could find in the buffet that makes it all worth while. It's the same trap that we fall into every time we go to Izzy's. With lowered expectations, this visit the food was better but not enough to make me want to go back. The buffet at the Great Wall is huge, they have a large selection of traditional Chinese and other Asian foods like sushi and teriyaki. They even had a pepperoni pizza. I started out with some seafood, a crab leg, oysters, mussels, and peppered shrimp. The crab had almost no flavor and it wasn't even worth the effort of cracking it open to eat. The mussels and oysters were well prepared but I never feel good about eating seafood in Salem especially at a buffet. The shrimp were good and gave me hope that there could be other worth while foods in the buffet. The next round I tried the General Tso's Chicken with steamed rice and was pleased with the taste of this entree. It was not as good as what you would get at Kwan's but better than what I was expecting. For round three, I went for the sushi, that's right, I went for the sushi. It was about as good as you would expect sushi to be at a Chinese buffet in Salem Oregon. Great Wall Buffet has taken some criticism by other blogs in town for being inconsistent and they did fail a county health inspection last year, but they are one of the busiest places in town. I've had several people tell me that they really like eating there. For my family, the meal was very filling and I got some fresh material for the blog.

Not big on this buffet though we thought it would be great it was a big let down. Not to mention my father in law getting sick after eating there he was the only one who ate the sushi. Though those little fried dough balls covered in sugar are pretty good.

I think the food is really pretty good - the white chicken is tender and white (not that gray gristly stuff you sometimes get in some Chinese places), and they have a decent selection of non-fried stuff like green beans, squid, etc.

But like all buffet places, the atmosphere is 'cattle car' if you go during busy times, and you have to be really hungry to get your money's worth (I went last week and it was nearly $12 per person).

If you're looking for a place where you can pick and choose whatever and however much you want to eat in Salem, Oregon, your only two choices will be - 1: The Great Wall Buffet, if you feel like Chinese; and 2: The Hometown Buffet, if you want something other than Chinese. I think that, considering the type of restaurants that they are (buffets), the Great Wall and Hometown are excellent buffets. If you want something fancy, go to a fancy retaurant! If you have a weak pallete and can't handle exotic foods, then you may want to stick to McDonald's.

If you are a person that thinks Great Wall is exotic food, I HIGHLY suggest you take a vacation out of Oregon! Great Wall should be closed for eternity! They are a digrace to any and ALL asian cultures.

I thought it was great. I take my family all the way from Portland to dine there because they get good food and plenty of it. There is a great selection and the people are friendly.

They didn't just fail their inspection once. I look at Marion County Inspections every once in awhile and this was a surprise. Like the place the first time but the next was not great.

Poor quality food. All their sauces are sugary sweet. Stir-fry overdone. Even the tea was poor quality and bitter.

I can't believe people still go to this place. Oregon needs to implement the scoring system like California has, where the restaurant MUST put the grade they have posted in the window.

This place just had an inspection on 12/29 and got a 75, which is a few points above FAILING.

Back in december of 2008 they got a score of 38. How is this place still in business??

This is one of my favorite weekend pig out stops. It is not my favorite Chinese food by a long shot (Golden Dragon downtown) nor is it my favorite sushi (Momiji's across the street) but it's the only place I can eat both at the same time and it's decent food.
