Great Wall Buffet
My family has been really supportive of this blog and bringing them back to the Great Wall Buffet on south Commercial street across from Buster's was a true test of their loyalty to it. I don't want to get into details but the last time we were there, things didn't go so well. This time we were just hungry and looking for a place that I hadn't blogged about yet. The hope was that the food would be considerably better than last time or there might be something we could find in the buffet that makes it all worth while. It's the same trap that we fall into every time we go to Izzy's. With lowered expectations, this visit the food was better but not enough to make me want to go back. The buffet at the Great Wall is huge, they have a large selection of traditional Chinese and other Asian foods like sushi and teriyaki. They even had a pepperoni pizza. I started out with some seafood, a crab leg, oysters, mussels, and peppered shrimp. The crab had almost no flavor and it wasn't even worth the effort of cracking it open to eat. The mussels and oysters were well prepared but I never feel good about eating seafood in Salem especially at a buffet. The shrimp were good and gave me hope that there could be other worth while foods in the buffet. The next round I tried the General Tso's Chicken with steamed rice and was pleased with the taste of this entree. It was not as good as what you would get at Kwan's but better than what I was expecting. For round three, I went for the sushi, that's right, I went for the sushi. It was about as good as you would expect sushi to be at a Chinese buffet in Salem Oregon. Great Wall Buffet has taken some criticism by other blogs in town for being inconsistent and they did fail a county health inspection last year, but they are one of the busiest places in town. I've had several people tell me that they really like eating there. For my family, the meal was very filling and I got some fresh material for the blog.
