Belly Dancing at The Beanery

The sound of a drum leading a middle eastern rhythm echoed throughout Liberty Street downtown drawing customers into an unexpected show at a local coffeehouse. Inside The Beanery, women dressed in colorful skirts and revealing tops danced through the aisles of the cafe to the delight of customers. A violin accompanied the drum, which is called a dumbek, and for a short time Salem didn't seem so boring. We weren't expecting the live entertainment at our favorite downtown after dinner spot, but the free show was the highlight of the whole evening. As people clapped along with the music, I saw smiles on faces both young and old, male and female. We ordered our coffee and shared a delicious Chocolate Lovers cake and enjoyed the show.
The Beanery is a small Oregon chain with three stores in Salem. Their coffee is as good as anywhere in town and the atmosphere is very comfortable. The dancers are from RJ Dance Studio where they have classes for belly dancers at all levels. Their next appearance at The Beanery on Liberty Street will be September 15th.

Actually, their coffee is far better than most of the others in Salem.
