With a second story view of downtown Salem, Thai Orchid hits the spot for atmosphere. Located above Starbucks at Liberty and Chemeketa Streets, this clean and nicely decorated restaurant was an excellent choice on a warm summer night. Usually on my first visit to a new Thai restaurant I order the basics. Tonight we had Tom Yum Soup, Pad Thai, and two orders of Satay for the kids with an extra order of sticky rice. Eveything was delicious. I couldn't stop eating the soup even though my lips were burning from the spices. 
The kids ate most of the Satay and even tried and liked the soup. Best of all, the server was friendly and attentive to the needs of a hungry family with young children eating a late dinner. All of this for under $40 including tip. We will definitely come back, maybe after spending the day exploring downtown or after work on a First Wednesday.Thai Orchid website
Had lunch here a couple of years ago...not good. Haven't been back.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe this place won Salem Monthly's Best Thai Food. Definitely edible, but rather boring. Thai Beer on Lancaster or Lanxang (sp?) on South Commercial (by Applebees) are better bets.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the othe other comments. The service is usually very slow, and the food is extremely average. I really liked Thailand Restaurant across the street, until it changed owners earlier this year. I've heard there's a good Thai place in Keizer, just across the border. Review?
ReplyDeletethai beer does have better food but i only get take out there now because of the snotty male waiter. we have had several problems with him over at least 8 trips.(it's my favorite food)bad sevice can break a resturaunt!
ReplyDeleteI have never had very fast table service at this restaurant when it's very busy, but the food is top notch. Try the #32 (Pra Rham)and #36 (Pad Ga Prao). The #36 is especially good with tofu (they have excellent tofu here) and has a fantastic flavor. I find it even better mixed with the peanut sauce from the #36!

ReplyDeleteGood tofu and the curry is tasty, many vegetarian options. The service has never been very slow as others have commented but then again every time I am in there there's only a handful of customers. Some of the dishes seem to suffer from a lack of freshness possibly because of the large menu.

ReplyDeleteWe went to this place last month (May 2009). Food was good but not great. Service was HORRIBLE!! I watched a waitress spill a beer on the floor and all over a gentleman's back. What made this really bad was the waitress didn't even realize that she had spilled the beer on a customer (even though he made seveal LOUD comments about it). I finally told the waitress what she had done and her response was "oh no" and then proceeded to walk by the guy at least five more times and never said one word to the guy!
