Cozumel Mexican Restaurant

Salem doesn't seem like the kind of place that you could get good Mexican food. Especially at a sit down restaurant. What I have found is that Salem has a lot of them but few are really good. Cozumel Family Mexican Restaurant in the Roth's shopping center on south Liberty is one place in town that is consistently good. They have a number of tasty choices on the menu that are on the lighter side. I really liked the Enchiladas de Espinica for $8.95. I'd never heard of enchiladas filled with spinach and mushrooms before and thought it was a great alternative to meat or cheese. Like many dinners I've eaten here, I went away feeling very satisfied with the quality and portion size. The server greeted our table with a very genuine smile and got the chips and salsa going quickly. Most of the dinners on the menu are between $8 and $15. For as good as this place is, there isn't much of a crowd. It might be that it's location has fewer traffic than Commercial St. or downtown. If you haven't been to Cozumel yet, it's worth a try. I'll bet that you find it comparable to La Hacienda and better than almost anywhere else in town.

A Jalisco style Mexican restaurant, Cozumel offers a variety of tasty dishes and welcoming atmosphere. Located in the Roth's parking lot on Liberty and Cunningham, Cozumel, formerly Ixtapa, has been at this location for seven years. $8.95 for the special tonight, carnitas de pollo served with warm corn tortillas. With onions, green peppers and strips of chicken breast, this savory dish seems less fattening then other items on the menu. Try anything that they serve and you will be satisfied and full at the end of the meal.
Cozumel has become a favorite with my family because of the fun tropical decor. Your eyes wander around the dining room in search of birds hidden in palm trees and sun ornaments hung throughout. Don't forget to get your picture taken with your friends and a sombrero. There's a funny montage by the front door of customers wearing the large Mexican hats. You might see someone you know.

Even though the name has changed...have the owners changed too? Or is it same people/different name?

Because years ago we ate there under the old name, and it was bad service, and bad food.

Okay, we'll have to give it a second try. The word "light" caught my eye. It's been a number of years since we ate there. I can't remember what name it went by at that time.

I ate there when it was Ixtapa. The service was O.K. and the chicken mole was fine as well. My 2 cents for the lonley blog post..

Are you serious? Spinach and mushroom enchiladas?! Sounds wonderful! That's what I'd like to see more of on Mexican restaurant menus - adding more vegetables to dishes. Especially, since a salad isn't a traditional offering.

We went to Ixtapa a few years ago. Not good. Better places in town for Mexican.

But, if this is different owner, would sure try them out.

I talked N into a rut-ectomy last night. We went to Cozumel instead of La Hacienda for dinner. I really liked the diced tomatoes and fried onions on top of my grilled chicken breast - such a flavorful addition. The flour tortillas seemed to be cooked until done and less greasy than La Hacienda. N, on the other hand, didn't think the beans or his shrimp dish were as good as the comparable dish at LH. With a little luck, I can talk him into a second try another time.

I'm glad I gave them a try! The food was excellent and their homemade flour tortillas were the best I've had so far! The place is clean and the staff is very friendly. Cozumel is now my favorite place!

We actually prefer Cozumel to La Hacienda--the food is comparable in quality, but Cozumel is less crowded and the service is faster and friendlier, at least in our experience. And my husband, who is Latino, prefers Cozumel's homemade tortillas hands-down over La Hacienda's.

One of the best Mexican places in Salem. When we lived out south we would eat there quite often. Since we moving to West Salem, we make a special trip every now and then. Good food, great prices and some the best Salsa around. I also recommend the Carne Asada or Chicken en Mole

I recently visited Cozumel restaurant and I was amazed at how wonderful my experience was. The food was fantastic and the service was even better. The dining room was clean and orderly, as were the restrooms. I have been going to this restaurant for five years now, and the service has improved remarkably. The employees seemed to go above and beyond their regular responsabilities. I greatly appreciate the friendly and familial atmosphere.

I don't know how anyone could think this is good Mexican food. Maybe I'm spoiled by the places in Portland and Hillsboro I know, and California too, but my boyfriend and I went there yesterday and we got tiny portions of tasteless, greasy food. He got a quesadilla with beans and rice for $7 and it was child sized with barely any cheese, and for as small as it was he couldn't even stomach the whole thing because it tasted like butter. It's pricey for what it is, and I've gotten better food out of a taco truck for half the price. The only good thing I have to say is that the service was nice.

My whole entire family absolutely LOVES Cozumel. The service was excellent, the prices were decent and we would recommend this place to everybody we know! The place is very clean & we love the decor. Everything from the chips & salsa to the chile relleno & enchiladas were so incredible. I was so impressed with the friendly people and great service with a smile (like Sergio).. can't wait to go back again! If you haven't tried Cozumel yet.. you don't know what you are missing. Wish I tried this awesome South Salem restaurant sooner. Two thumbs up & 5 star rating from me!

We eat there quite often and have always loved it. It does have new owners since the name change. Former employees when it was Ixtapa now run and own the place. We always receive excellent service. Because it isn't super busy, its a great place for kids. Our girls can dance next to the table and not bother anyone or get in the way. Taking little ones out to eat can be a hassle, but not at Cozumel.
